Heartbreak was never alien to The Police<\/a> and their music. From the very beginning, albums like Outlandos d\u2019Amour and Reggatta de Blanc contained songs such as \u2018Can\u2019t Stand Losing You\u2019 and \u2018The Bed\u2019s Too Big Without You\u2019. It was a classic songwriting subject, and Sting was never afraid to use it for all it was worth.<\/p>\n

But a new bitter taste of reality hit Sting around the time The Police<\/a> were recording Synchronicity. He was going through a divorce from his first wife, Frances Tomelty, in 1984. The split was exacerbated by tabloid fodder that showed Sting\u2019s relationship with his wife\u2019s close friend, Trudie Styler.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In order to escape the hounding of the press and the familiarity of London, Sting and Styler moved down to the Caribbean. Landing in Jamaica, Sting claims that the inspiration for the track \u2018King of Pain\u2019 arrived in full as he awoke one morning and observed the sky.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, it was something I said,\u201d Sting recalled on the In The Studio radio show. \u201cI\u2019d just left my first wife \u2013 a very painful break \u2013 and I went to Jamaica to try and pull myself together. I was fortunate to be able to go to Jamaica, I have to say, and stayed at this nice house and was looking at the sun one day.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI was with Trudie who is now my current wife and said \u2018Look, there\u2019s a little black spot on the sun today\u2019\u201d, Sting continues. \u201cAnd there\u2019s a pause. I said, \u2018That\u2019s my soul up there\u2019. I was full of hyperbole. I said that! I went back in and wrote it down on a piece of stuff, and wrote some other stuff.\u201d <\/p>\n

Sting adds that he \u201cconjured up symbols of pain and related them to my soul. A black spot on the sun struck me as being a very painful image, and I felt that was my soul up there on the sun. It\u2019s just projecting your state into the world of symbolism, which is what poetry\u2019s all about, really.\u201d <\/p>\n

According to engineer and producer Hugh Padgham, \u2018King of Pain\u2019 took a long time to complete, particularly as Sting became dissatisfied with the original arrangement. \u201cIf you listen to it now, it\u2019s very stripped down, bits and pieces coming in here and there,\u201d Padgham recalled in a 2006 interview with Larry Crane. \u201cLiterally everything was recorded all the way through and I really remember that one well \u2014 sitting down with Sting coming in one day, when we were mixing and [Sting] going, \u2018This is shit\u2019 and I went, \u2018I think you\u2019re probably right.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

Sting and Pagham laboriously restructured the track, recording new elements like keyboard lines and percussion. The end result would be the fourth single from Synchronicity, released exclusively in the US in the summer of 1983. Although not as successful as the album\u2019s first single, \u2018Every Breath You Take\u2019, \u2018King of Pain\u2019 still rose to number three on the Billboard Hot 100, solidifying Synchronicity as an all-time blockbuster album.<\/p>\n

What makes \u2018King of Pain\u2019 endure is the way Sting transformed intensely personal turmoil into imagery that felt universal. Rather than directly detailing the collapse of his marriage, he buried those emotions beneath surreal symbols and poetic snapshots, allowing listeners to project their own heartbreak onto the song. That balance between emotional honesty and lyrical abstraction became one of Sting\u2019s greatest strengths as a songwriter, particularly during The Police\u2019s final years.<\/p>\n

The track also represented the growing tension that defined Synchronicity as an album. By this point, the relationship between Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland had become increasingly fractured, with each member pulling in different creative directions. <\/p>\n

Yet somehow, that friction produced some of the band\u2019s most focused and emotionally resonant material. Much like \u2018Every Breath You Take\u2019, \u2018King of Pain\u2019 captures a group on the verge of collapse while simultaneously operating at the peak of its powers.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
