Jonas Vingegaard was the strongest on the summit finish to Corno alle Scale and has extended his lead to Felix Gall which is now of 35 seconds. He remains 2:24 minutes behind Afonso Eulálio into the race’s time trial, which does not assure he will move into the race lead.

Gall is third and Jai Hindley moved up to fourth; whilst Astana’s Christian Scaroni ends the first week of the race in fifth overall after a strong climb this Sunday. Thymen Arensman has had a strong ascent and brought the benefits by now linking up to sixth on GC, followed very closely by Mathys Rondel and a Ben O’Connor who shed some important seconds today.

Giulio Pellizzari has descended from sixth to ninth on GC, the main loser of the day. Luck would have it that the Italian would experience a bad day on a stage where the gaps wouldn’t be overly big; but he nevertheless lost meaningful time to his direct rivals. Michael Storer closes the Top10.

Enric Mas and Jan Christen officially dropped out of GC contention whilst Igor Arrieta also lost quite a few positions. Davide Piganzoli climbed up to 13th with a stellar third place on the day and is now directly ahead of Derek Gee and Egan Bernal who will look to climb into the Top10 on the more climber-friendly second half of the race.

OrderPosition ChangesRiderTeamTime1- Eulálio AfonsoBahrain – Victorious38:49:442- Vingegaard JonasTeam Visma | Lease a Bike2:243- Gall FelixDecathlon CMA CGM Team2:594▲1 Hindley JaiRed Bull – BORA – hansgrohe4:325▼1 Scaroni ChristianXDS Astana Team4:436▲3 Arensman ThymenNetcompany INEOS5:007▲1 Rondel MathysTudor Pro Cycling Team5:018▼1 O’Connor BenTeam Jayco AlUla5:039▼3 Pellizzari GiulioRed Bull – BORA – hansgrohe5:1510- Storer MichaelTudor Pro Cycling Team5:2011- Beloki MarkelEF Education – EasyPost6:0212- Hirt JanNSN Cycling Team6:1113▲3 Piganzoli DavideTeam Visma | Lease a Bike,,14- Gee-West DerekLidl – Trek6:1515- Bernal EganNetcompany INEOS6:4916▲1 Caruso DamianoBahrain – Victorious7:0317▲3 Van Eetvelt LennertLotto Intermarché7:3718▲6 Kuss SeppTeam Visma | Lease a Bike8:2419▼6 Arrieta IgorUAE Team Emirates – XRG8:2720▼2 Harper ChrisPinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team8:2921▲2 de la Cruz DavidPinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team8:4222▼1 Kulset JohannesUno-X Mobility8:4823▼1 Cepeda Jefferson AlexanderEF Education – EasyPost9:2224▲2 López Harold MartínXDS Astana Team9:3525▲3 Ciccone GiulioLidl – Trek9:54Points Classification Standings after Stage 9The points classification remained rather similar today, with the sprinters holding back. Paul Magnier once again covered the attacks of Jonathan Milan, and so we see the same points towards the top. A second consecutive 1st category summit finish, with double the points, saw Jonas Vingegaard win once again. On two climbs, he has gathered 100 points. His lead has skyrocketed up and is now of 51 points over Diego Pablo Sevilla, whilst it is Felix Gall who sits third. Einer Rubio has moved up to fourth and is possibly signaling his intentions to target the jersey, but the almost 100-point gap back to Vingegaard will prove challenging to close down.

Order Position ChangesRiderTeamPoints1- Vingegaard JonasTeam Visma | Lease a Bike1112- Sevilla Diego PabloTeam Polti VisitMalta603- Gall FelixDecathlon CMA CGM Team484▲4 Rubio EinerMovistar Team225▼1 Arrieta IgorUAE Team Emirates – XRG186▼1 Oliveira NelsonMovistar Team187▲5 Eulálio AfonsoBahrain – Victorious168▼2 Hindley JaiRed Bull – BORA – hansgrohe169 Piganzoli DavideTeam Visma | Lease a Bike1610▼3 Tarozzi ManueleBardiani CSF 7 Saber14Youth Classification Standings after Stage 9

This would come as a surprise to anyone before the stage, but the truth is Afonso Eulálio has actually extended his gap over his rivals in the battle for the white jersey.
