A perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is out there, and Gillian Anderson<\/a>‘s new horror movie has found it.<\/p>\n

Anderson’s most iconic role is as FBI Special Agent and doctor Dana Scully in the beloved science-fiction drama series The X-Files<\/a>. The original show aired for nine seasons from 1993-2002, followed by the two-season revival that followed in 2016-2018. Anderson received four Emmy Award nominations and one win for her portrayal of Scully and also won an Emmy for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in Netflix’s The Crown. Some of her other notable credits include Hannibal, Sex Education, and The Abandons.<\/p>\n

Now, Anderson’s new movie, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, has debuted with a perfect 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes after making a worldwide debut at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The impressive score has been maintained even after having a total of 36 reviews added to the aggregation site, although the score may fluctuate as more reviews come in.<\/p>\n

Directed and written by Jane Schoenbrun, the movie’s plot revolves around queer director Kris (Hacks’ Hannah Einbinder), who is hired to revive the struggling Camp Miasma slasher franchise, and brings back original star Billy Preston (Anderson) to do so, which leads to horrifying consequences. The cast also includes Severance’s Zach Cherry, Saturday Night Live’s Sarah Sherman, Yellowjackets’ Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mad Men’s character actor Patrick Fischler.<\/p>\n

Inverse<\/a>‘s review by Katie Riff declares that Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is “a highly personal work, a defense of problematic favs, and a movie that only Jane Schoenbrun could make.” Siddhant Adlakha builds on this sentiment in his review at Decider<\/a>: “There\u2019s nothing quite like engaging with the forbidden head-on, which Schoenbrun does by framing the very act of filmmaking as a psychosexual ritual \u2014 an urge akin to a serial killer\u2019s murder spree.”<\/p>\n

The two main stars have received plenty of praise as well, including from Stephanie Zacharek at Time<\/a> magazine: “What Anderson does here, as a 1990s scream queen turned glamorous, eccentric recluse, is sublime, and her co-star Hannah Einbinder keeps pace with her every minute.”<\/p>\n

Schoenbrun’s latest film is the third and final installment in what has been dubbed the “Self-Induced Hallucination” or Screen Trilogy<\/a>. 2021’s We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, 2024’s I Saw the TV Glow, and 2026’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma do not feature the same characters, nor are they a continuation of the same story, but they deal with many of the same themes involving queer identity and one’s relationship to media.<\/p>\n

We’re All Going to the World’s Fair deals with a teenager’s relationship with the internet, followed by a Buffy the Vampire Slayer-esque television series in I Saw the TV Glow, and now a long-running slasher franchise in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. All three movies use the characters’ relationships with media to explore queer identity, including the second one specifically serving as an allegory for being transgender.<\/p>\n

The Screen Trilogy has received consistent critical acclaim, with We’re All Going to the World’s Fair getting a “Certified Fresh” 91% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and I Saw the TV Glow’s reviews<\/a> leading to a “Certified Fresh” 85%. The audience response was more divided given the dismal 28% Popcornmeter score for the former and the solid 71% score for the latter.<\/p>\n

For now, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma marks the trilogy’s best critical reception yet with its 100% score, although that could change, especially after the movie comes to theaters on August 7. It is being distributed by Mubi, while its predecessors were respectively distributed by Utopia and A24.<\/p>\n
