They’re dumping a whole range of stuff.

Rubbish dumped by the bins (Image: Supplied)

“Right now there’s a bath tub. Both the refuse bins are full.

“I have had enough. It’s driving me mad.

“It’s out of hand. I am just so frustrated and angry.”

She added that the problem is also a “health and safety hazard”, with shards of broken glass sometimes littering the pavement. She also believes local businesses may be leaving their rubbish there.

Lauren said she is often contacting the council to report fly tipping or mess, as well as cleaning up rubbish on the green.

She has requested that cameras be installed in the area to catch fly-tippers and issue fines.

“Put a camera in and fine the people that are dumping stuff,” she said.

One of the refuse bins at capacity (Image: Supplied)

“It’s just not fair on the local residents.

“This is meant to be a nice area. It looks like a dumping ground for people. It’s vulgar.

“I’m not entirely blaming the council. The people are contributing to the mess and chaos.

“It’s the people of Brighton that need to be called out.”

She added that the bins are not being emptied regularly enough and feels daily collections are necessary to ensure the bins are useable.

Councillor Tim Rowkins, deputy leader and cabinet member for net zero and environmental services at Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “We know the impact that flytipping at our communal bins has on residents and we are taking steps to address it.

“Frustrating as that is, there are things that drive this behaviour. First, around 40 per cent of residents in the city don’t have access to a vehicle and in the city centre it’s closer to 60 per cent.

“That is why from April 1 we reduced the cost of our bulky waste collection service by more than half, making it much more affordable for residents to dispose of their larger items responsibly.

“For residents who cannot transport their larger items to our household waste recycling sites, we encourage them to use this service, which can be booked quickly and easily via the council website.

“We are also looking at other measures such as skip days and waste amnesties and, alongside this greater range of options, we will also be expanding our use of CCTV to identify those responsible for the more egregious instances of flytipping.

“Businesses are required to have commercial waste arrangements in place and should not be using residential bins. Where evidence is found of businesses using residential bins, the council is likely to take enforcement action.”

Lauren, 30, has lived near Vernon Terrace in Brighton for three years, during which time she has seen…

[22
1397,90,56,54,55
post-590447","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
