{"id":590596,"date":"2026-05-18T13:02:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/590596\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T13:02:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:02:11","slug":"shakira-in-line-for-e55m-payout-as-spanish-court-rules-tax-fines-were-wrong-shakira","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/590596\/","title":{"rendered":"Shakira in line for \u20ac55m payout as Spanish court rules tax fines were wrong | Shakira"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A court in Madrid has ordered Spain\u2019s tax authority to pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/shakira\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shakira<\/a> back more than \u20ac55m (\u00a348m) after ruling that it had wrongly imposed huge fines on the Colombian singer and philanthropist because it had made mistakes over her tax status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a statement released on Monday, the Audiencia Nacional said it had accepted an appeal from Shakira against the fine she was handed five years ago after the Agencia Tributaria claimed she had not paid the necessary tax in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/spain\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a> in 2011. At that time, the singer was in a relationship with the FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The court said the agency had failed to prove that Shakira had spent more than 183 days in Spain that year, which would have obliged her to pay personal income tax in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOn the contrary, the court understands that Shakira\u2019s stay in our country was 163 days and that the tax agency has therefore not proved that the singer had core economic interests in Spain \u2026 as set out in the terms established [by law],\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The court ordered the tax agency to return the amounts it had fined Shakira and to pay her interest and costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, it also pointed out that its decision \u2013 which can be appealed against in the supreme court \u2013 related only to the 2011 tax case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In November 2023, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2023\/nov\/20\/shakira-reaches-deal-with-spanish-tax-authorities-to-avoid-145m-tax-trial\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">singer reached a settlement with prosecutors<\/a> to avoid a trial in Barcelona over charges she had failed to pay \u20ac14.5m (\u00a312.7m) in Spanish income tax between 2012 and 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As part of the deal, she accepted the charges and a fine of 50% of the amount owed, more than \u20ac7.3m. She also accepted a further fine of \u20ac438,000 to avoid a three-year prison sentence.
