{"id":59101,"date":"2025-08-11T12:07:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T12:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/59101\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T12:07:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T12:07:08","slug":"the-33-1-3-book-series-why-you-should-read-entries-by-these-four-northern-ohio-scribes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/59101\/","title":{"rendered":"The 33 1\/3 book series: Why you should read entries by these four Northern Ohio scribes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7GKBAN7SSRF7TP5IF7FY5EY6WA\">CLEVELAND, Ohio \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/us\/series\/33-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomsbury<\/a>\u2019s ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/333sound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201c33 1\/3\u201d book series<\/a> is a gift and a godsend to music obsessives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UXPBYZVOKJCDHIHJSPT347KMZ4\">The short, smart (borderline scholarly) entries are deep personal explorations of legendary albums that shaped genres, fandoms and generations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TUTW2UH4ABCUJIAH55ZT6RBCQE\">It should surprise no one that those penned by sturdy writers with regional ties are among the series\u2019 best. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DUME26RTLJEDVDEAPLT7CJR7U4\">Jason Pettigrew, Annie Zaleski, Kimberly Mack and DX Ferris tackle their subjects \u2013 Ministry, Duran Duran, Living Colour and Slayer, respectively \u2013 with professorial depth, big-picture eyes and ears and zeal that only comes from a heart anchored in fandom. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SHEP2ZM3BNDH7FR4KSMPXUACUY\">While the subjects might seem wildly different, what connects the books is the authors\u2019 ability to combine deep reporting, cultural critique and personal insight that puts words to how people feel about the artists and their work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZFLVUCAEMVDS5HAQDTYTOJ5NAE\">Two are pretty new; two others have been given the deluxe treatment. These aren\u2019t just album reviews. They\u2019re love letters to noise, neon and catharsis:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K5I4MWIVPRB4ZB3NU5QQZSANTU\">\u201cMinistry\u2019s \u2018The Land of Rape and Honey\u2019 by Jason Pettigrew\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6FUQECDCRVEX5MPMPSIZVAYINE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ptgrw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pettigrew<\/a>, a longtime editor of then-CLE-based Alternative Press and one of the scene\u2019s sharpest and most sardonic minds, takes on Ministry\u2019s 1988 breakthrough \u201cThe Land of Rape and Honey.\u201d He delivers a book as brutal and confrontational as the record itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OIV6ZSXQUJG7LFMAXDUOJUA4FE\">More than a turning point for the band, the album marked the moment industrial music stopped flirting with the mainstream and threw a Molotov cocktail through its window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XOQMY6DCUVDHVKIAOXHDGD2F44\">Pettigrew doesn\u2019t just dissect the music, he immerses us in the world it came from: rusted-out cities, Reagan-era paranoia, underground clubs humming with nihilism and noise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ECYRZW7GCJACJHK6XDQ5QNJ6RE\">He explores how Ministry\u2019s shift from synth-pop to sonic warfare wasn\u2019t just about sound; it was about identity, aggression and survival. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"23QA7GDXRBEV3BNU6GSAWOHXW4\">Pettigrew\u2019s writing style mirrors the record: aggressive, funny, loaded with subtext. He pulls no punches, giving Al Jourgensen his due as mad scientist and accidental prophet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QBOVM46YQRGQNBZEJLWGAI4D3Y\">For anyone who ever found power in abrasive music \u2014 or wondered why some of us feel more at home with distortion than melody \u2014 this one\u2019s 100% essential. David Petkiewicz, cleveland.comDavid Petkiewicz, cleveland.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4IRLEP5MGJBX3KEEGWLA23DSVE\">\u201cDuran Duran\u2019s \u2018Rio\u2019 by Annie Zaleski\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DFLAGGCMGVAEZMYCHG6X3NVOHI\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anniez.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zaleski<\/a> is one of the more respected music critics working today and a proud Clevelander. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EX2OUK4I3FCFPEAATXUAAG3HXM\">She rescues and reclaims Duran Duran\u2019s seminal \u201cRio\u201d album from the \u201cguilty pleasure\u201d bin and places it where it belongs: among the most influential pop albums of the 1980s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LMTGR33Q65HSRDUVF77K4VDFF4\">What makes her book so compelling? Smart reporting, interviews and historical context. She unpacks the cultural and emotional resonance of the record with both clarity and care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"26FK3PQYZFATJFHKWXYU5KEJVQ\">Zaleski argues that \u201cRio\u201d wasn\u2019t just a soundtrack for MTV-era teens; it was a sonic revolution wrapped in silk suits and eyeliner. Her love of the heartthrobs underscores this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HUIPKSEKEJFHHFY5NQKK7DNPFQ\">Whatever you thought of DD before you started reading, it\u2019s clear they\u2019re as important as Roxy Music in the DNA chains where glam, New Wave, funk and fashion entwined. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FUMSHELULVENTFZ2BP5QOSL6GY\">As a reader, you\u2019re left thinking that \u201cRio\u201d changed the way we all consume pop and might have even accidentally birthed the \u201cboy-band\u201d aesthetic in the process. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NZWLQPCCOZA45PEBWSAYEY6THA\">Zaleski gives due credit to often-dismissed teenage girls who were first to recognize Duran Duran\u2019s genius \u2013 flipping the script on who gets to be a \u201cserious\u201d fan and why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SD3K3BNLNZEYND7SYUOWYL6UHQ\">This is a book you\u2019ll have trouble putting down. If you ever had a poster on your wall, danced alone in your bedroom, or found something transcendent in perfect pop hooks, it\u2019s for you. Bonus: there\u2019s a deluxe, hardcover version out there to enjoy. (Photo by Scott Legato\/Getty Images)Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QRUNH5WQL5H4JEFC57N22E4YGI\">\u201cLiving Colour\u2019s \u2018Time\u2019s Up\u2019 by Kimberly Mack\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C67DE4TOWRHEXCNYPFOTXIQKOU\">Mack, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/entertainment\/2023\/05\/author-and-rock-fan-kimberly-macks-entry-into-the-33-13-series-of-books-highlights-living-colours-times-up.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/entertainment\/2023\/05\/author-and-rock-fan-kimberly-macks-entry-into-the-33-13-series-of-books-highlights-living-colours-times-up.html\">associate professor of African American literature and culture<\/a> at the University of Toledo, tackles the sophomore effort from the \u201cNew York quartet of Black dudes playing loud metal and punk-influenced rock \u2018n\u2019 roll,\u201d as our very own Malcolm X Abram wrote upon the book\u2019s release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RFBHM4WVYBHMRBZQ7EIXMDBF2M\">The group of Corey Glover (vocals), Vernon Reid (guitars), Muzz Skillings (bass) and Will Calhoun (drums) had already smashed stereotypes with the 1988 debut album \u201cVivid\u201d (with the Top 15 hit song \u201cCult of Personality\u201d) which gave them a bona fide chart success. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7RU6KYHPDZH4DG5X6HC6ASPTDI\">That record would sell over two million copies. It also earned Living Colour its first Grammy Award, for best hard rock performance in 1990.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S6GDIS75UNAZTEYMADGTLHZUPU\">\u201cTime\u2019s Up\u201d rang up a second such award for them the following year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YCBD3DM2VRH5TBGSNXGSAN3HNQ\">Mack\u2019s beautifully written account does something authors don\u2019t always do well: connecting the personal in an engaging way. The album is 35 years old but remains fiery-fresh today, even without a guidebook to map things out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HI7GKHMVERBYBCJ7SA76ZLL7LQ\">The book and record it serves are pointed, tough, jazzy, eclectic, subversive. Mack\u2019s track-by-track drill-down is insightful; her interviews note perfect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BTUKHSRJPJCLNHX3L2MJVGSEBY\">What\u2019s crazy? The roster of cameos on \u201cTime\u2019s Up.\u201d We\u2019re talking Queen Latifah, James Earl Jones (?!), Doug E. Fresh, Maceo Parker and Little Richard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZWRQTJCTKBFS5P4ATRA6HZZ7UQ\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/05_17_2022\/literature-and-pop-music-scholar-wins-award-for-first-book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/05_17_2022\/literature-and-pop-music-scholar-wins-award-for-first-book\">Mack<\/a> brings all of that and more into sharp focus&#8230; and with minutes to spare. Can one hold out hope she will do an installment on ska-punk legends Fishbone or prog-metal trio King\u2019s X? Never has. His deep dive into Slayer\u2019s \u201cReign in Blood\u201d album is as intense and surgically precise as the album itself. And now there\u2019s a \u201cdirector\u2019s cut\u201d with even more haunting metal madness. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4CNRX2B2MVC7TNJBMQE6MFAPY4\">Released in 1986, \u201cReign in Blood\u201d record was a game-changer: a 29-minute thrash metal sledgehammer that broke rules, melted faces, put Rick Rubin on the map and became a constitutional for heaviness. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UO27JPQVQVE3PDAJYQZ654UINU\">Ferris, a veteran CLE music writer and \u201cmetal dad,\u201d gets right to the core of why \u201cReign in Blood\u201d matters. It\u2019s an album not just for metalheads; it\u2019s for anyone who cares about rebellion, discipline and the razor\u2019s edge between chaos and control. Perfectly fitting for the times we are living in now. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZSZJBZ6LSNAVRPZFJO22RGCMLU\">His storytelling is sharp and efficient, balancing musicology with behind-the-scenes insights. Whether he\u2019s analyzing Rick Rubin\u2019s role in shaping the band\u2019s sound or putting Slayer\u2019s satanic imagery in historical context, Ferris respects both genre and reader and deeply affirms Slayer fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YEEVYMF3VFG7JE45YC5XCMNQIU\">It\u2019s \u201csurgery, with no anesthesia,\u201d as frontman Tom Araya might say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SXUCKRDICBHALPXYVESQB7F3JQ\">The imagery (as is so often the case with heavy bands) belies a deeper message lost on those who judge things by their cover instead of practicing what they preach. \u201cReign in Blood\u201d is a great entry point for the uninitiated.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Freaks on Parade Tour: Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper Co-Headline at Blossom Music Center with Ministry and Filter\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/JIDBYBGZKJDAPB67STNDGR5HCM.jpg\" \/>Al Jourgensen, frontman of Ministry at Blossom Music Center on August 28, 2024.Judie Vegh, Special to Cleveland.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5VWPOGWFHVERLKFN2GVYBRKZ5Q\">We like big books and we cannot lie<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UVEO6EIU3VAZ7NMCROZOYZ6EUM\">We like smaller books with big impact, too. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TVEPEB6PNZEKFHIRD7WXZJOVOA\">What links these books transcends geography. There\u2019s honest sensibility, deep knowledge of subcultures and a refusal of the authors to write down to their audience. They elevate subjects without over-intellectualizing them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5HN62GO735B33JEKUACXKCR7LE\">It helps to be a fan of these bands (no doubt) but also not required. There\u2019s so much to take in with all four books, you might have trouble concentrating on others in your \u201cto read\u201d pile. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7CKVG4B4BJA57ET2RMH7WXTJKI\">PS: It may be a little early to be thinking about the holiday season, but if you know an audiophile or tune-obsessive who pores over facts and consumes music like oxygen, get them in the loop on the larger series ASAP. <\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
