Her death was confirmed by Thaddaeus Ropac, who <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/ropac.net\/artists\/41-valie-export\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">represents<\/a> her. Born in 1940 in Linz as Waltraud Lehner, EXPORT developed a radical artistic language that centred the female body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Writing in <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2026\/may\/15\/valie-export-tribute-performance-artist-femisim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>, the author Hettie Judah said that she was a \u201cpunk, intellectual, feminist, theorist, brave as hell, vulnerable, funny\u2014Valie Export was a hero to many women. Since the 1960s, she was driven by a fierce conviction that art and media would play an essential role in women\u2019s liberation: that women must picture their own reality in the name of social progress.\u201d The UK artist Penny Davis wrote on Instagram that \u201cshe was a feminist artist so marginalised I only learned about her work in the last decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Geneva-based culture writer Nazli Kok Akbas commented on <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DYW6oQzNv6h\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instagram<\/a> that \u201cthrough radical performances, experimental film, photography, and media interventions, EXPORT transformed the female body from an object of representation into a site of political agency and resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Museums and institutions have also paid homage. Neuenationalgalerie in Berlin said <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DYW2ZvinFGj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">online<\/a> that it was \u201cdeeply saddened\u201d by the passing of the artist, adding that documentation of her 1968 performance Tap and Touch Cinema\u00a0features in its current collection presentation <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smb.museum\/en\/museums-institutions\/neue-nationalgalerie\/exhibitions\/detail\/extreme-tension-art-between-politics-and-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Extreme Tension<\/a> (until 25 April 2027). The sculpture\u2014consisting of a pair of women\u2019s legs mounted on a rusted steel bed with a stream of red neon running from between them\u2014was coupled with a\u00a0looped video of a Catholic priest saying mass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201c#MeToo has been helpful, but we have only achieved 10% of the mission of feminism,\u201d she said in an <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2019\/12\/02\/valie-export-female-artists-are-disadvantaged-because-the-market-is-determined-by-men\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with The Art Newspaper on the occasion of the exhibition. For the piece, she invited passers-by, mostly men, to touch her breasts through curtains affixed to a box, prompting questions about the male gaze and the power of the patriarchy. In her Body Configurations\u00a0(1972-76) series, she slotted her body in and around the urban landscapes of Vienna, wrapping herself around buildings and other landmarks, melding with the built environment.
