\n\tThe Cannes Film Festival<\/a> flipped for \u201cFjord<\/a>\u201d on Monday night, as Cristian Mungiu\u2019s heart-wrenching family legal saga starring Sebastian Stan<\/a> and Renate Reinsve<\/a> brought searing drama to the Grand Palais.<\/p>\n

\n\tA Romanian family with strict religious beliefs emigrates to a sleepy Norwegian village \u2014 watching as clashing social norms escalates into a living nightmare when their children are stripped from them over alleged abuse. The premiere audience gasped and snorted in disbelief as Stan and Reinsve suffer the indignity of an overreaching state \u2014 removing teens, tweens and an infant from their loving care.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI want to thank everybody here for trusting me,\u201d Mungiu said in French and then in English, saying Cannes was the ultimate indicator of whether or not his film would stand the test of time.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFjord\u201d follows the Gheorghiu family \u2014 consisting of a Romanian father (Stan) and Norwegian mother (Reinsve) \u2014 as they settle into new life in a remote Norwegian village, the mother\u2019s birthplace. They quickly bond with the Halbergs, who live in the neighboring house near the bay, and, despite their very different upbringings, the children of both families soon become close friends. When the Gheorghius are suspected of disturbing behavior, their lives are thrown into chaos as they become the center of small-town scrutiny.<\/p>\n

\n\tMungiu won Cannes\u2019 highest honor, the Palme d\u2019Or, in 2007 with \u201c4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,\u201d and was later awarded the festival\u2019s best screenplay prize in 2012 for \u201cBeyond the Hills\u201d and the best director prize in 2016 for \u201cGraduation.\u201d His 2022 drama \u201cR.M.N.\u201d also competed in competition at Cannes. Mungiu\u2019s cast is also made of Cannes veterans, as Stan attended for the Donald Trump movie \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d and Reinsve won best actress for \u201cThe Worst Person in the World.\u201d Reinsve was back at Cannes last year for \u201cSentimental Value,\u201d which won the Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFjord\u201d was picked up by Neon a year before its Cannes debut.
