It was good to get back to the Torbay Hospital Radio studio last week.<\/p>\n
I had been off for 6 weeks, the longest time away in my eight or so years of patrolling the airwaves. Hugh and I have been on Monday afternoons for about five of those years and I had been in on Tuesday nights as well. That coupled with being treasurer and a trustee of the charity I decided to cut back and now it\u2019s just Mondays. I felt refreshed and ready to go.<\/p>\n
Whilst THR is a small station and with limited audience numbers, we do have big ambitions and very high standards. After all we want to produce the best quality shows for our core audience, who are the patients on the wards, who may need a little cheering up. That means our presenters put in a lot of time preparing for when we go on air. There is no large production team, so normally presenters write the scripts, produce the show and then push all the buttons and slide the faders.<\/p>\n
In my case I was thinking about a return to the air for the bulk of the last six weeks and preparing some new jingles, yes we have to do them as well. So by the time I got into the studio I had pages of stuff I wanted to talk about, way too much for a co-presented two hour show. That means I have plenty to carry forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It was particularly pleasing to be nominated for a Hospital Radio Association award, now we did not win and I know it\u2019s not about the winning but it would have been nice. Anyway with a whole lot of new ideas Hugh and I hope to be challenging at the awards ceremony again next year.<\/p>\n
Our friends at Plymouth Hospital Radio took home the station award, which is a fantastic achievement and all a Torbay offer our congratulations. They to, like all Hospital Radio stations are manned by volunteers and whilst doing something they love, they do so in their own time with no hint of a pay cheque. Oh to be paid for doing something you love, wouldn\u2019t that be nice. We are always on the lookout for presenters (or jingle writers\/producers) so if you fancy a go, why not get in contact via our website.<\/p>\n
Now I am always on the look out for ideas for our show, we try and find something fun and\/or interesting. We have various features in our show which include praising the small joys that everyday things or activities can give, such as the garden gnome or sharpening a pencil. Well it seemed like a good idea at the time, perhaps I need another six weeks off? Another key feature of course is the music we play, for us we try to link it to the story we are relaying, other presenters will have a theme or a genre, no two shows are ever the same.<\/p>\n
Not everything went to plan on the return show. We had carefully prepared an outside broadcast. (Just to be clear none of it was actually outside) we were in Portsmouth at the Mary Rose, telling its historic story. Sound effects had been carefully woven into the recording. Unfortunately the production team (me) had loaded p the wrong recording and what went out was minus the sound effects, so it will get a re run when I find the proper one. Hardly award winning potential!<\/p>\n
I will be looking for some music, because even a single song can lift a long afternoon on a ward, if you\u2019re not there by choice.
