Chester Magistrates’ court<\/a>, Gregory said he needed his driving licence as he visited his mother up to three times a week.<\/p>\n\u201cIf I’m banned I wont be able to see her – she lives a few miles away from my home,\u201d he said, \u201cMy mum drives and but she is 86 and I do not like her on the roads especially at night.<\/p>\n
\u201cI go to see my mum in the work\u2019s van. I tell her to put the kettle on and make a butty. I will have a quick 20 minutes with her. It could be three times a week, it could be once a week.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do care for her. She has watched my career all the way through. I care a hell of a lot for my mum. Anybody who knows me knows I care for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is very strong and stubborn. But she won’t have anyone say I am her carer. If anyone has got feelings and cannot see your own loved ones, there is something seriously wrong with you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Representing himself, Gregory, from Priory Road, Ashton-In-Makerfield, also said he helps out as a voluntary coach for charitable organisations Life for a Kid and Soldiers\u2019 League.<\/p>\n
He admitted his wife drives but said she works full time. He added he did not want to burden her with taking him to matches on a Saturday afternoon, when she had jobs at home she needed to catch up on. He also said a ban would cost him his job as a delivery driver.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have always worked hard,” Gregory told JPs. ”When I played rugby, I did the best I could. I succeeded. I have always paid my taxes and national insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n
But in fining him \u00a340 with \u00a3146 in costs and a surcharge, JP Ian Williams told Gregory: ”Whist we find your evidence to be very honest and very refreshing, we did not feel an exceptional hardship case was made in the circumstances.<\/p>\n
”I apologise, I realise it is hard. People who are unemployed do pay fines. We are assuming because of this you will be made unemployed so we are treating the level of fine in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
In response, Gregory told the bench: \u201cHow am I going to pay the fine. I cannot believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n
During his career he won 26 GB caps and played for Widnes and Warrington before signing for Wigan in 1986 for a then world record fee of \u00a3130,000.<\/p>\n
He subsequently won the 1987 Player of the Year award and was one of only two players to play in six Ashes series against Australia before retiring in 1994.<\/p>\n
