{"id":593481,"date":"2026-05-20T00:50:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T00:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/593481\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T00:50:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T00:50:20","slug":"mimosa-architects-shapes-czech-cabin-from-rock-river-and-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/593481\/","title":{"rendered":"Mimosa Architects shapes Czech cabin from &#8220;rock, river and fire&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Burnt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wood<\/a> and black <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/metal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">metal<\/a> define this rural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cabins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cabin<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/czech-republic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Czech Republic<\/a>, created by local studio Mimosa Architects to replace its scorched predecessor.<\/p>\n<p>Wrapped in blackened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/larch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">larch<\/a> boards, the 78-square-metre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cottages\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cottage<\/a> is located near Prose\u010dnice on the banks of the S\u00e1zava river, and sits on the site of another cabin that burned down.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327293 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/river-rock-fire-house-mimosa-architects-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"River, Rock, Fire by Mimosa Architects\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Mimosa Architects clad the rural cabin with charred larch boards<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.mimosa.cz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mimosa Architects<\/a> drew from the surrounding nature and the site&#8217;s position between the river and rocky terrain, designing the cabin to blend in with its forested environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that such a relationship is one of the prerequisites for the long-term protection of the landscape,&#8221; Mimosa Architects principal Petr Mor\u00e1\u010dek told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327321 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/river-rock-fire-house-mimosa-architects-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_27-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Riverside cabin in Czech forest\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1575\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The cabin is located on the banks of the S\u00e1zava River in the Czech Republic<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The river literally flows within fishing rod reach,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With this in mind, we wanted to draw a link between each natural aspect of land and the site&#8217;s original structure \u2013 rock, river and fire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327308 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/river-rock-fire-house-mimosa-architects-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Open-plan living area in Czech cabin\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It sits on the site of a cabin that burned down<\/p>\n<p>After the fire, the only remaining feature of the structure was the stone plinth it rested on. This was retained as the base for the new cabin, keeping it elevated from flooding and also giving it views over the river.<\/p>\n<p>The structure is entirely timber-based, primarily using natural and recycled materials.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/05\/12\/whistler-hideaway-bricault-design-vancouver-cabin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/whistler-hideaway-bricault-design-vancouver-cabin_dezeen_2364_sq_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Whistler Hideaway cabin in Vancouver by Bricault Design\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Bricault Design shapes house to &#8220;share a language with the surrounding peaks&#8221; in Canada\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Reusing the original stone foundation made it possible to avoid new foundations and minimise interventions in the terrain,&#8221; said Mor\u00e1\u010dek.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Charring the larch wood gives the timber a durable quality, and as a plus, its dark facade ensures that the natural scenery is not disturbed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327317 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/river-rock-fire-house-mimosa-architects-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_23-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Woodstove fire view of Sazava River\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1575\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The cabin rests on a stone plinth, elevating it from floods<\/p>\n<p>While the exterior of the cabin is meant to &#8220;perhaps somewhat cynically&#8221; reference its predecessor, the interior has been made lighter with the use of spruce bio-board, accented with black steel.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the cottage the material and colour palettes were pared-back and minimal, keeping the space uncluttered and &#8220;cave-like&#8221;. Its sparse decor encourages the feeling of free-flowing movement between the indoors and outdoors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327314 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/river-rock-fire-house-mimosa-architects-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_20-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Spruce wood and black steel interior of cabin\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1575\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The interior is made of light spruce wood and black metal<\/p>\n<p>The downstairs level contains the kitchen, dining area and living room in one open-plan space, with bedrooms on the first floor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The generosity of the main space is enabled by the small upstairs rooms,&#8221; Mor\u00e1\u010dek explained. &#8220;After all, the purpose of going out of the city is to be together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327307 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/river-rock-fire-house-mimosa-architects-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Guarded balcony on Czech log cabin by Mimosa Architects\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The terrace can be open or closed entirely<\/p>\n<p>The cabin&#8217;s light spruce wood walls, ceilings and furniture are punctuated by hints of black metal from the wood-burning stove, the staircase and in the smaller hardware details.<\/p>\n<p>Grounding the space, the floors are a long-lasting natural linoleum that reference the grey of the stone plinth and rocky terrain outside.<\/p>\n<p>The shared space spans the full height of the cabin and connects the front and back of the site, overlooking the river and the cliffs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The interior space is essentially just a simple connection between the areas in front of and behind the cabin,&#8221; said Mor\u00e1\u010dek.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327318 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/river-rock-fire-house-mimosa-architects-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_24-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Czech cottage in forest\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The charred wood references the site&#8217;s predecessor<\/p>\n<p>The entire length of the cabin facing the river has been glazed, and a raised terrace running alongside it has views of the S\u00e1zava.<\/p>\n<p>A large folding shutter shelters the cottage from strong sunlight, and also gives the house the option to transform into &#8220;a closed, impregnable box&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327306 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/river-rock-fire-house-mimosa-architects-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Front view of Czech log cabin by Mimosa Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1575\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The black wood lets the cabin blend into its surroundings<\/p>\n<p>Outside and towards the back of the timber-framed structure, water-resistant sheet metal has been installed to facilitate drainage and surface run-off on the roof.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from requiring electricity, the cottage is substantially self-sufficient.
