I\u2019ll be brutally honest, I was a Virtua Cop<\/a> guy growing up.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong, I had a lot of fun playing Time Crisis<\/a> in the arcade, but I didn\u2019t actually have it at home. I had the Virtua Gun for the SEGA Saturn y\u2019see, so a lot of my youth was spent blasting through AM2\u2019s rails shooter.<\/p>\n

I bought a GunCon and Time Crisis off eBay not too long ago, and ran through the campaign several times. It\u2019s timeless even today, and it obviously feels best with that hearty Namco accessory in your hands.<\/p>\n

It was always going to be difficult for emulation outfit Implicit Conversions to transfer that experience to the PS5, then, where the gameplay needs to be broadly accessible to everyone. Of course, you\u2019ve got the original d-pad controls in there, but that\u2019s no fun, is it?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m surprised and delighted to see this version take advantage of the DualSense\u2019s gyroscope, then, which offers a decent facsimile of the light gun experience.<\/p>\n

Now look, I\u2019m not going to lie to you: it\u2019s not the same. This feels more like a cursor than a true light gun, but it does retain that physical action of making you feel like you\u2019re aiming all around the screen.<\/p>\n

The default control setup \u2013 which can be changed to suit your needs \u2013 maps the pedal to R1 and the trigger to Circle. Lining up headshots, particularly on those faraway enemies, feels pretty good.<\/p>\n

The DualSense\u2019s gyros aren\u2019t perfect, and do have a tendency to drift over time. But you can push Triangle to recentre your aim, which is a thoughtful addition.<\/p>\n

Obviously the PS1 version of this game does have some cutbacks compared to the original arcade release, but it benefits from extra stages which really extend the longevity of the overall campaign.<\/p>\n

The superior NTSC version is selected by default, but you can toggle to the tardy PAL edition if you really want to deal with the iffy performance from your childhood. (Why would you torture yourself like that, though?)<\/p>\n

The big bummer here, as we\u2019ve already mentioned<\/a>, is that there are no Trophies included. Obviously that doesn\u2019t impact the overall experience \u2013 this is still a classic \u2013 but it is a shame Bandai Namco hasn\u2019t included them to add value to the port overall.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, having spent an hour or so with Time Crisis\u2019 new gyroscope controls, I\u2019d love to see other GunCon games follow. Point Blank<\/a> and Resident Evil: Dead Aim<\/a> would be among my picks, but I\u2019d obviously love the other Time Crisis titles as well.<\/p>\n
