Sally Bolton, the All England Club’s first female chief executive, is to step down after this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

Bolton, 51, took over the position in 2020 and oversaw the tournament’s cancellation that year because of the Covid pandemic and its return the following year. During her time as chief executive, Wimbledon took the decision to scrap its traditional middle Sunday rest day and move to a 14-day tournament. Last year line judges were scrapped for the first time in the event’s history, in favour of electronic line calling.

Debbie Jevans, the chairwoman of the All England Club, said: “Sally has made a very important contribution to the success of the All England Club and the championships for over a decade and particularly as chief executive for the past six years.

“I’d like to thank Sally for her hard work and dedication over that time and commend her for guiding the organisation through a period of significant change.”

Richard Atkinson, the financial director, will serve as interim chief executive until a permanent appointment is made.

Bolton said it had been “a great honour and privilege” to serve as chief executive, adding: “I am proud of what we have achieved together — particularly bringing the championships back following the pandemic and in shaping a clear path for the future. The All England Club is a very special institution and I look forward to seeing it continue to flourish in the years ahead.”

Bolton has also overseen plans to expand the Wimbledon site on to the former Wimbledon Park Golf Club, including 38 new grass courts and an 8,000-seater stadium. It provoked opposition from campaigners in the area but the All England Club won an important High Court ruling in March that should allow the development to go ahead.

This month leading players said they could boycott a grand-slam tournament because of disagreements over the prize money being offered and player rights. Aryna Sabalenka, the women’s world No1, and Coco Gauff, the French Open champion, both said they would be prepared to take such a stand and Jannik Sinner, the men’s No1 and Wimbledon champion, said the players felt disrespected by the grand-slams.

Wimbledon is due to announce its prize money for the 2026 championships in the coming weeks, having increased it by 7 per cent last year.

Sally Bolton, the All England Club’s first female chief executive, is to step down after this year’s Wimbledon…

[38
101,118,56,54,55
post-593883","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-sports","tag-tennis","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
