Butterfly Pharmacy,<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0business he opened in 2009.<\/p>\nFor nearly 20 years, he has stayed afloat in an ever-changing economy and has expanded his office to serve communities across the state of Florida.<\/p>\n
But today, he says tariffs are affecting his bottom line. \u201cWe are serving the patients at very, very slim margins, sometimes negative reimbursements,” Jannu said.<\/p>\n
He says ADHD medication and GLP-1 are seeing the biggest increases because their ingredients are made in foreign countries.<\/p>\n
And that\u2019s affecting availability, too.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen we are having to make do with giving them alternative medications, but sometimes the alternatives are not much cheaper,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
USF Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management Seckin Ozkul, says mom-and-pop pharmacies are feeling the effect much more than bigger chains.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey already have smaller margins of profit. They\u2019re going to be squeezed there,” Ozkul said. “And some inventory issues can be seen because the pharmacies with larger buying power will get more inventory than the smaller ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says those tariffs could also force pharmacies to diversify where they purchase their inventory.<\/p>\n
Jannu says it’s not just the medication that\u2019s being affected. Itt\u2019s also the packaging they use, too.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe price of the roll went up by at least 30%, the Viles, it went up, and these are the things nobody talks about. But they are directly impacted by the tariffs,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
Jannu said he is staying positive that there will be a solution soon.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndependent pharmacies are not able to survive, so now we are working with thinner margins, but we believe everything comes around,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a price he must pay to keep his doors open and to continue serving the community.<\/p>\n
