{"id":595175,"date":"2026-05-20T23:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T23:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/595175\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T23:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T23:09:08","slug":"murder-inquiry-launched-after-fatal-assault-on-london-bus-driver-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/595175\/","title":{"rendered":"Murder inquiry launched after fatal assault on London bus driver | London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A murder investigation has been launched after a bus driver died after an assault on Battersea Bridge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/london\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>, police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sergei Krajev, 64, died in hospital on Tuesday after the incident in the early hours of Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Police believe he was attacked following a confrontation on the pavement near the bus, which was stationary at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gary Jones, 32, was arrested at the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm and appeared at Wimbledon magistrates court. He has been remanded in custody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jones will next appear at Kingston crown court on 15 June, the Metropolitan police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The family of Krajev paid tribute to him, saying: \u201cWe feel fortunate to have had such a wonderful husband, father and grandfather in our lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe was a thoughtful, tactful and conscientious person who cared about those around him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn his role as a bus driver, he was punctual, reliable and willing to help.
