Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks may be all grown up now it’s turned 30, but the residents of the Chester village certainly aren’t any wiser! Lying, cheating and scheming remain on the menu as the summer months arrive, and even the sad loss of local legend Diane won’t set her loved ones on a path to a more honest and fulfilling life.

Inside Soap recently sat down with Hollyoaks’ executive producer Hannah Cheers for a sneaky gossip about what’s to come, including new arrivals, shock returns, and even a surprise wedding or two for good measure. Read on for all the highlights!

1. A ‘Summer of Secrets’ lies ahead"maddox,

Lime Pictures

Hollyoaks bosses have a special theme planned for the show’s unmissable summer storylines, as everything comes together following the recent burst of new characters and fresh dynamics.

“We celebrated the 30th anniversary in a fitting and nostalgic way, with all of our heartland characters,” explains Hannah.

“This year is about mixing things up a bit, having started with the introduction of the Keane family.

“I’m branding the next few months our ‘Summer of Secrets’, which will bring fresh new energy and surprises…”

2. Beth has plenty to hide"beth,

Lime Pictures

Hollyoaks aired a welcome callback to the past this year when Jack Osborne’s daughter Beth reappeared in his life, as a central part of the Keane family.

Her return got off to a dramatic start with plenty of fiery rows over that huge car crash, but it seems that there’s even bigger chaos to come!

“Beth has been the most talked-about character in any long-term story conference, because she is the missing piece in Jack’s life,” confirms Hannah. “But we always needed the space to make sure we did it right, and now we’re really excited about how she can add new dynamism and new dimensions to the Osbornes.

“The Keanes have come in with a bang in terms of having this huge divide with the Osbornes over the car crash, but there are many more secrets to come from Beth, and who she might also be connected to, which is a big spoiler!”

3. There’s more to come from Ant, Dee Dee and Ro"ro,

Lime Pictures

Talented young stars Brook Debio, Chloe Atkinson and Leo Cole have wowed fans with their moving performances as Ant, Dee Dee and Ro throughout Diane’s cancer story. Unsurprisingly, show chiefs have big plans for the trio’s futures beyond this…

“Diane’s death marks the end of a big chapter in Hollyoaks,” notes Hannah. “Her passing leaves a huge legacy, with Tony at the heart of it, and his three brilliant teenage children who are going to be front and centre across the summer, into the autumn and next year, with all kinds of major stories.”

4. Tony receives mysterious messages"hollyoaks

Lime Pictures

Hollyoaks’ legendary original character Tony is one to watch following the sad loss of Diane – but who decides to reach out to him amid his grief?

“Someone attempting to message Tony kicks off a bit of a mystery,” teases Hannah. “There’s a question about who it is trying to offer their condolences, which will lead into a surprise return…”

5. Warren, Mercedes and Jenson have a big summer plot"jenson

Lime Pictures

Mercedes is currently trying to make things work with enigmatic newbie Jenson, but fans know that Hollyoaks can never close the door on her dynamic with Warren for long…

“We’ve got a really exciting saga across the summer,” promises Hannah. “It’s a big old game of chess that manifests with another surprising person in the mix of that.

“It’s a story where no one person knows everything, and everyone knows a different part of a secret.

“For me, it’s Warren and Mercedes forever, but will they really get their happily ever after? I absolutely love Jen Metcalfe and Jamie Lomas, I’m obsessed with watching them and they work so hard to bring a freshness and energy.

“If Warren and Mercedes could live on a desert island with no other complications in life, they’d be very happy. But unfortunately, they live in Hollyoaks!”

6. Leah and Imran are living it up"leah

Ean Flanders//Lime Pictures

Earlier this year, we broke the news that Hollyoaks had started working on a brand new boat set to replace the Love Boat, which was blown up in the 30th anniversary episodes.

Expect Imran and Leah to move into the new location when they return to the village.

“They’re going to occupy the boat, which is being transformed into a very swanky houseboat,” confirms Hannah. “What is so beautiful about their return is that they’ve grown up – it’s been two years since we’ve seen Leah, and longer since we’ve seen Imran.

“They’ve been away living in the sunny States, and they come back in a blaze of LA sunshine, dripping in wealth and glamour and ready to set the cat among the pigeons.

“Absolutely everybody is stunned to realise that Imran is now a tech millionaire, and Leah is there proudly on his arm, looking a million dollars, happy to spend his money!”

She adds: “Leah has her own aspirations and pursuits – we know she’s a very headstrong young woman – and is absolutely obsessed and fascinated by people in relationships.

“And in a very modern story that we’ll be playing over the summer, she stirs up a lot of trouble within our new peer group, which will comprise Caleb and Frankie, Vicky and Prince, and Leah and Imran.

“The six of them will be in this big, brilliant story that’s all about traitors, secrets and lies. It’s going to be a really fun ride.”

7. Ste has another huge story ahead"ste

Lime Pictures

Life is never quiet for Ste and that’ll continue for the rest of the year, as he deals with Leah’s surprise return – and a new mystery…

“He’s delighted and takes any opportunity to borrow Leah’s credit card to go shopping,” laughs Hannah. “He can’t really believe his daughter is a millionaire, and is constantly trying to get stuff out of her, which is funny.

“We’ve just seen Ste and Rex’s wedding, and just after that, a big story will kick off for them which will take us all the way through to the autumn. Leah and Ste’s stories will collide, and Ste finds himself at the centre of another big mystery, which will hopefully cause a lot of uproar!”

8. Newcomer Abigail supports Dee Dee"brooke

Stephen Whalley Photography//Lime Pictures

Hollyoaks recently surprised fans with the great news that Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent is returning to Soapland, with a new regular role in the Channel 4 show. Details of her character were scarce at the time, but more has now been revealed…

“It’s going to be a very different role for her in a major story that will take hold over the summer,” says Hannah. “Her character, Abigail, is not connected to anyone in the village.

“The story starts when Dee Dee, spiralling after Diane’s death, takes ketamine a couple of times. Tony finds out and makes the rash decision to drive her to a teen rehab facility where she meets this counsellor, Abigail.

“Dee Dee ends up escaping from rehab and Abigail follows her back to the village, then decides to stick around. Abigail’s a very dynamic presence, she’s cool and progressive and loves people. She easily makes friends and will end up being flatmates with someone in the village, and landing a job there.”

9. More weddings are coming up"pearl

Lime Pictures

Jack and Pearl got engaged in Hollyoaks’ Christmas episodes, so how long will we have to wait to see them tie the knot?

“There might be another couple of weddings that end up elbowing them out of the schedule!” admits Hannah. “We absolutely love Jack and Pearl and they’re so important to the fabric of the show. But there’s so much that has to happen fast so we can get to certain points, and it’s really important to still have that grain of believability.

“The reality is that Jack and Pearl would be enjoying a long engagement, and I think that’s a demonstration of their commitment to each other.”

10. There are complications for Donny and Misbah"donny

Lime Pictures

Donny and Misbah have gone to hell and back over the past year. They’ll soon face drama of a different kind, though, as Imran’s reappearance shakes up their lives once more.

“I will say that Donny and Misbah’s lives are set to get more complicated by the arrival of Imran and Leah,” reveals Hannah.

“There are a lot of interesting characters in the Maalik-Clarke household now with Gemma, Vicky, Imran and Prince. It’s a bit of a tangled web and Donny and Misbah will find themselves in the thick of that.”

11. Dodger and Cleo still have unfinished business"cleo

Lime Pictures

Dodger and Theresa have been rebuilding their relationship, but let’s not forget that Cleo is still in the picture.

“I love that Theresa is the one person who can make Dodger smile!” shares Hannah. “Dodger wants to love Theresa as much as he says he does, but there’s just a connection between him and Cleo – I’m quite proud of the fact that we seeded this over a year ago, and so far on screen they’ve only kissed, they’ve not slept together.

“Cleo’s going to have a bit of fun over the summer, which I think she deserves, but as always it’ll end up becoming complicated…”

12. Lucas’s return is on the way"lucas

Lime Pictures

It’s been a long on-screen break for Lucas, who’s serving time in prison, but Oscar Curtis will be reprising the role in the coming weeks.

“Lucas will be back!” confirms Hannah. “I can’t wait to see Leah, Lucas and Ste reunited, so watch this space across the summer for that!”

13. It’s not the last we’ve seen of Sienna"sienna

Lime Pictures

Sienna is also currently on a break from our screens following her own imprisonment, but she hasn’t gone too far either…

“Sienna’s in prison, but we’re not done with her,” guarantees Hannah. “That’s all I can say for now…”

14. There are big plans for Kathleen-Angel"kathleen

Lime Pictures

Hollyoaks recast Kathleen-Angel this year as Naledi Rapotu took over the part. After a chaotic start, expect even bigger drama later in the year…

“There’s a lot more coming up for Kathleen-Angel,” says Hannah. “Naledi Rapotu is an incredible young woman, and an absolute future star.”

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
