{"id":596887,"date":"2026-05-21T21:48:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T21:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/596887\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T21:48:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T21:48:13","slug":"uhw-surgeon-blackmailed-for-drugs-after-having-sex-with-patient-suspended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/596887\/","title":{"rendered":"UHW surgeon &#8216;blackmailed&#8217; for drugs after having sex with patient suspended"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His counsel, Fiona Robertson, said that between mid-August 2019 and late January 2020 Patient A was no longer under Patel&#8217;s clinical care and his evidence was that he believed his formal involvement in her treatment had come to an end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Robertson said there was no dispute Patel&#8217;s actions had seriously departed from professional standards but submitted the relationship was instigated by Patient A and &#8220;largely driven by her through the ongoing threats and blackmail&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a written statement, Patel said he feared Patient A would report him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I was afraid if she did so I could lose the job I so loved and had worked so hard to obtain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Given my speciality, this would have a knock-on effect on other patients if I was unable to work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;With the benefit of hindsight I know I should nonetheless have ended the relationship and been honest with my employer.
