{"id":598541,"date":"2026-05-22T19:39:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T19:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/598541\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T19:39:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T19:39:09","slug":"three-red-flags-and-mercedes-1-2-in-messy-canadian-gp-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/598541\/","title":{"rendered":"Three red flags and Mercedes 1-2 in messy Canadian GP practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli led a Mercedes 1-2 amid three red flags in the sole practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes is debuting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-race.com\/formula-1\/mercedes-brings-its-first-big-2026-upgrade-to-canadian-gp\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its first major upgrade<\/a> of 2026 this weekend in Montreal and it kicked off with some blinding pace in the first and only practice session ahead of sprint qualifying on Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Points leader Antonelli traded places with team-mate George Russell at the top of the times throughout the session &#8211; with Antonelli ending up on top with a 1m13.402s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That was 0.142s quicker than Russell\u2019s best effort and over seven tenths clear of the fastest non-Mercedes car &#8211; the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f1_2026_R05_FP1.png\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1125\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>But it was a session dominated by session-stopping incidents with three separate stoppages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Liam Lawson\u2019s Racing Bulls caused the first red flag of the session as he had to pull to the side of the circuit on the run to the Turn 3\/4 chicane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lawson complained of power steering issues over the radio, but it\u2019s likely to be a more significant issue, like a hydraulic problem. That limited his running to just five laps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And things could get even worse for him as his car has been referred to the stewards by the technical delegate, as while recovering his car, the marshals found the clutch release button (the \u2018CDS\u2019) on Lawson\u2019s car wasn\u2019t working &#8211; something that\u2019s against the technical regulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then Alex Albon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-race.com\/formula-1\/canada-f1-practice-interrupted-by-albon-groundhog-crash\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struck a groundhog<\/a> exiting the Turn 6-7 chicane, which sent him into the wall.<\/p>\n<p>It caused extensive damage to the left-hand side of the car, as Albon ground to a halt around 25 minutes into the session, which caused a delay that led to the FIA extending the session by 15 minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, inside the final 10 minutes of the session, Esteban Ocon lost control at the Turn 8\/9 chicane and tore the front bodywork of his Haas off.<\/p>\n<p>Ocon recovered his car to the pits but was noted at the end of the session for leaving the pitlane when the red light was displayed.<\/p>\n<p>Franco Colapinto lost his entire session to a power unit issue.
