Then it all started to unravel. As DeChambeau battled unspecified problems in his personal life, as well as persistent equipment tinkering, a wrist injury then forced him out of LIV\u2019s next event in Mexico<\/a>. A third-place in Virginia<\/a> cushioned the fall somewhat, but then the rug was pulled again at the PGA Championship as the 32-year-old\u2019s second straight failure to make a major weekend led to a rather bizarre exit<\/a> at Aronimink.<\/p>\n

And this is all before we get to the fact that, in the middle of all this, Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund decided to withdraw it\u2019s multibillion-dollar backing<\/a> of LIV Golf following the conclusion of the 2026 campaign, leaving the future of all the league\u2019s players up in the air.<\/p>\n

Of course, particularly when it comes to LIV\u2019s star name, the rumors have been rife. DeChambeau was reported to have met with PGA Tour representatives under the Big Oak Tree<\/a> at Augusta, while another theory is that he will have a limited schedule so he can focus on his YouTube channel<\/a>. DeChambeau currently has just shy of three million subscribers, but he has targeted tripling that number by reaching a more global audience. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d love to do a bunch of dubbing in different languages, giving the world more reason to watch YouTube,\u201d he told ESPN<\/a>. \u201cAnd then I\u2019d love to play tournaments that want me.\u201d The second of his two US Open titles in 2024 means he is exempt in that tournament until 2034, The Open until 2028, and the Masters and PGA Championship until 2029.<\/p>\n

The uncertainty of his future, though, has left DeChambeau at a fork in the road.<\/p>\n

In a thoroughly entertaining \u2013 by which I mean largely excruciating \u2013 appearance on the\u00a0Katie Miller Podcast<\/a>, the two-time US Open champion seems open to either route.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in a weird space right now, I don\u2019t know what to do \u2013 either content creation or professional golf,\u201d DeChambeau says. \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

But then Miller asks DeChambeau a question that seems to take him by surprise. Which one is more lucrative? He shuffles in his seat and laughs awkwardly as he appears to try and do some quick sums in his head. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d say they\u2019re about the same,\u201d he concludes. Then, raising his hand above his head, adds: \u201cIf you\u2019re up at that level in content creation, they are very, very similar.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s certainly a bold claim, even with the most basic math.<\/p>\n

DeChambeau commanded a signing-on fee reported to be worth $125 million from LIV Golf, and has gone on to make $56 million in prize money on the league<\/a>. That\u2019s on top of the $37 million he made on the PGA Tour before jumping ship. Put your calculators away, it\u2019s $218 million.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, YouTube\u2019s current highest-earning star is Jimmy Donaldson, better known to your kids as Mr Beast, who rakes in up to $100 million a year from 488 million subscribers and a far bigger target demographic.<\/p>\n

In the golf sphere, only Rick Shiels is ahead of DeChambeau<\/a>, with around 300,000 more subscribers. According to a number of sources, Shiels\u2019 channel rakes in anything between $250,000 and $750,000 a year. Which, if you\u2019ll excuse the somewhat crude dismissal of what is a colossal amount of money to most people, is relative pocket change to what DeChambeau can earn on tour.<\/p>\n

Either way, he\u2019s not going to be struggling to make rent any time soon. But whatever keeps him in the headlines.<\/p>\n

Other than his career crossroads, DeChambeau was also quizzed on a number of topics by his host. Here are a couple more pearls of wisdom from the Californian\u2026<\/p>\n

When asked if he would rather win the Masters or play golf on the moon, DeChambeau barely has time to think before Miller follows up on his general beliefs around the moon landing. DeChambeau, seemingly aware of Miller\u2019s core audience, plays it safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, Elon [Musk] says we\u2019ve definitely gone, so I tend to go that route, because he\u2019s the man that knows quite a bit about all that.\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s always a \u2018but\u2019, though, and DeChambeau is yet to be convinced by everything from the Apollo 11 lunar mission in 1969.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think the footage is real,\u201d he adds. \u201cBut I think we did go to the moon. I don\u2019t know about the footage. It\u2019s quite wild.\u201d<\/p>\n

(For context, later in the interview, DeChambeau says he believes in aliens.)<\/p>\n

Then, seemingly remembering the final question, DeChambeau said: \u201cLook, [winning] the Masters is something I\u2019ve grown up always wanting to do. Going to the moon has been a recent content idea \u2013 although I wanted to go to space as a kid. So you\u2019ve thrown me a curveball, but I\u2019m going to say the Masters, just because it\u2019s something I\u2019ve dreamed of for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2026his relationship with Donald Trump<\/p>\n

It is no secret that Trump and DeChambeau are close. Indeed, the golfer attended the President\u2019s inauguration and has since been appointed to the White House Sports Council. <\/p>\n

The pair have also played together a number of times \u2013 notably when Trump appeared on DeChambeau\u2019s Break 50 YouTube series<\/a> \u2013 and DeChambeau said the first time they teed up was \u201cmore nerve-wracking\u201d than any putt he\u2019s ever stood over to win a tournament, while he described playing with scores of Secret Service in attendance is \u201cnot comfortable\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"Donald<\/p>\n

But this anecdote was perhaps the most telling of their somewhat strange friendship. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe gives me a lot of crap about pickles,\u201d DeChambeau said, before explaining that he was once having lunch with Trump when the wait staff put pickles on his sandwich despite his very specific request to leave them off. <\/p>\n

\u201cI got pretty intense,\u201d DeChambeau gestures before reiterating that he demanded \u201cno pickles\u201d, much to Trump\u2019s bemusement.<\/p>\n

DeChambeaue continues: \u201cAnd he said, \u2018Now that is why you\u2019re a major champion!\u2019 Because I\u2019d got pretty aggressive. So he gives me the pickles story every time I\u2019m around him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe just take pickles off next time, champ, rather than berating low-income staff.<\/p>\n

\u2026dating in the public eye<\/p>\n

DeChambeau\u2019s relationship status has seemingly been set to \u201cit\u2019s complicated\u201d for a number of years.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s understood to be single, though he has been linked to a number of women<\/a> over the years. When Miller asks if \u201cgirls slide into [his] DMs\u201d, DeChambeau responds: \u201cI\u2019m in a different situation now.\u201d Make of that what you will.<\/p>\n
