{"id":599469,"date":"2026-05-23T08:10:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T08:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/599469\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T08:10:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T08:10:08","slug":"marwell-zoo-and-university-of-surrey-launch-ai-camera-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/599469\/","title":{"rendered":"Marwell Zoo and University of Surrey launch AI camera project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Under the project, which is set to begin in June, scientists from the University of Surrey will work to develop the program, which will track a baseline for the animal&#8217;s nocturnal activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">When their normal activity changes, it is hoped the software will be able to recognise this and flag it to veterinary teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The program could also be used to inform how the zoo lights and heats the animal&#8217;s habitats, as well as feeds the animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">If successful, the software could then be used in other zoos and have potential applications in the wider veterinary world, Read and the university&#8217;s Prof Kevin Wells said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wells, a professor of AI in human and veterinary healthcare, added: &#8220;This is my first time working with exotic animals.
