Chief operating officer Steve Wilson explained why the warning was issued following a problem at the water supplier’s Maerdy treatment works.

In a video message to customers, Mr Wilson said: “Earlier today [Friday] we identified an issue with the chemical treatment process at our Maerdy water treatment works. As a precaution we immediately stopped water from that site entering the network while we try to resolve this issue safely.

“I want to reassure customers that water supplies will continue and we don’t expect any interruption to that service. However, customers in these affected areas are being asked to boil their tap water before drinking, brushing their teeth, preparing food or making ice.”

The boil water notice covers much of Rhondda Cynon Taf. However, people replied in the comments that they had turned up to find no water station there as the address given was incorrect.

Facebook users told Welsh Water that the correct address for the station was actually next to Ferndale Community School. The company replied that it would be updating its Facebook post about the address “as quickly as possible”.

In his video message Mr Cook said supplies were being provided to care homes and hospitals. He apologised and thanked people for their patience, adding that the notice would be lifted once checks had established the water supply “meets the high standards our customers expect”.

You can check whether your area is affected using the postcode checker here.

People have been urged to boil their tap water before drinking, brushing their teeth, preparing food or making…

[22
1397,4438,4439,90,56,54,55,25901
post-599514","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-rhondda","tag-rhondda-cynon-taf","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-welsh-water
["GET
