Phil Collins<\/a> has ruled out performing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year, and has touched on the ongoing strain of the health battles that have plagued him for years.<\/p>\n

The former\u00a0Genesis<\/a> drummer has been suffering from health issues in recent years, following a spinal injury back in 2007. At Genesis\u2019\u00a0final shows in 2022<\/a>, he performed from a chair while his son Nic took on drum duties.<\/p>\n

Speaking on BBC Breakfast on Friday (May 22), Collins offered an update, saying he was \u201chealthier now\u201d than he had been for a while.\u00a0\u201cThe last 18 months has been fine,\u201d he said. \u201cBefore that, not so good.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything health-wise caught up with me at the same time. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong, but everything is fine now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had problems with my knee, which I had for a while but I played through it, I toured through it,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut eventually I had to have a knee operation and I had to have it done five times because it either kept getting infected or it broke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collins was then asked about the prospect of future live performances, to which he replied: \u201cI can\u2019t really see it happening, but I\u2019m healthier now than I have been for quite a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

He is set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year<\/a>, which will be his second since he was previously honoured as a member of Genesis in 2010.\u00a0Speaking about November\u2019s the induction ceremony, Collins said: \u201cI mean, this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thing, they asked me if I would perform and I said no, [because] you\u2019ve got to be match fit to do something like that.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t just go onstage \u2013 you have to rehearse, and by that point if you\u2019ve not been singing then your voice is going to be shot, and then that\u2019s not going to be good, so I\u2019d rather not do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut whether I\u2019d go out again, I would contemplate, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes after\u00a0Dennis DeYoung hit out at the Rock Hall last year, saying many deserving musicians have been overlooked or made to wait \u201cso long\u201d to be inducted<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cMaking so many musicians wait until they [are] either incapacitated or dead is shameful,\u201d he said back in November.<\/p>\n

As for Collins, back in January he spoke to Zoe Ball on BBC<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Eras podcast, giving fans an update on his health after revealing that he has had a \u201cdifficult, frustrating few years\u201d.<\/p>\n

Last year, Collins shut down unfounded rumours<\/a>\u00a0that he was\u00a0being placed under hospice care and \u201con his deathbed\u201d<\/a>. It is unclear where the rumours originated, and no evidence was shared to support the claims.<\/p>\n

At the time, Collins\u2019 team said he had been hospitalised for knee surgery.\u00a0Collins went on to reveal that he has undergone five surgeries on his knee and now has one \u201cthat works\u201d and \u201cI can walk, albeit with assistance, you know, crutches or whatever\u201d.<\/p>\n

Collins also revealed that he recently celebrated two years of sobriety, adding: \u201cIt\u2019s just been a difficult, interesting, frustrating last few years\u2026 but it\u2019s alright now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on: \u201cI enjoyed coming off tour. Coming off the road\u2026 I thought, right, I\u2019m gonna do all those things that I couldn\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collins said he began drinking during the day, adding: \u201cI guess I had too much of it. I was never drunk, although I fell over a couple of times. But it is just one of those things that happened and it all caught up with me, and I spent months in hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that aside from being back to being \u201ctotally mobile and healthy\u201d, he would like to go into the studio and \u201chave a fiddle about and see if there\u2019s more music\u2026 you\u2019ve gotta start doing it to see if you can do it\u201d.<\/p>\n

That comes after Collins previously said\u00a0he is \u201cnot hungry\u201d enough to make any new music in February 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prior to that, Collins\u00a0shared an update on his health through the documentary\u00a0Drummer First<\/a>\u00a0in 2024, though it had been recorded two years prior. In that clip, he was\u00a0seen talking to popular YouTube drumming channel Drumeo<\/a>, where he shared that he was still adjusting to not being able to drum anymore, and said that he\u2019d rather take time away from the kit than be unable to play like he did before. \u201cIf I can\u2019t do what I did as well as I did it, I\u2019d rather relax and not do anything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But I just feel like I\u2019ve used up my air miles,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s still kind of sinking in a bit\u2026 I\u2019ve spent all my life playing drums. This wasn\u2019t the first time that Phil Collins had shared an update with fans and revealed his ongoing struggles to perform. Back in 2021,\u00a0he revealed that he could \u201cbarely hold a stick\u201d due to health issues.<\/a><\/p>\n
