The U.K.’s embattled leader recently vowed<\/a> to put his country \u201cat the heart of Europe,\u201d as part of efforts to shore up support and\u00a0shrug off calls for his resignation<\/a>, following dismal local election results.<\/p>\n

London’s new single market proposal<\/a> was presented by Michael Ellam, Starmer\u2019s post-Brexit negotiator, during recent visits to Brussels, according to reports<\/a> by the Guardian and other British media outlets<\/a>. The reports also said that EU officials rejected the idea.<\/p>\n

Attention is instead shifting to hashing out the details of existing negotiations between the EU and the U.K., according to a BBC report<\/a>, that cites industry figures who were briefed on the ongoing talks. Those negotiations would include food, farm, and energy trade.<\/p>\n

The European Commission said on Saturday that it would not comment on the media reports. “In view of the next EU-U.K. summit<\/a>, we are working to conclude the key files of last year\u2019s Common Understanding,” a spokesperson for the Commission said.<\/p>\n
