closely watched measurement of US consumer sentiment fell to a fresh, all-time low in May, according to the latest survey from the University of Michigan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpgzgno0000b3j6safzyvk9t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The May consumer sentiment index dropped for the third consecutive month, falling to 44.2 and landing below the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/10\/economy\/us-consumer-sentiment-record-low-april\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous record low of 49.8 set in April<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpgzo96b000h3j6snytq0ktp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US-Israeli war in Iran and its subsequent oil supply crunch and price shocks have worsened sentiment that already was soured by years of high inflation and an affordability crisis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpgzr47g000l3j6svjibjndm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe cost of living continues to be a first-order concern, with 57% of consumers spontaneously mentioning that high prices were eroding their personal finances, up from 50% last month,\u201d Joanne Hsu, director of the university\u2019s Surveys of Consumers, wrote in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph0w8ni00153j6s972696yb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consumers\u2019 personal finances sank by 13% in May, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpgzcaim00063j6s9y2eevue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The University of Michigan\u2019s sentiment survey dates back to 1952: Americans are feeling worse now than they did during wars, the 1970s oil crisis, 9\/11, the Great Recession, the Covid-19 pandemic and the inflation surge afterward.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpgzutuc000n3j6suejppopl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some of the sharpest declines in sentiment came from lower-income consumers and those without college degrees, she said, noting that increases in the cost of fuel and other essentials hit those groups particularly hard.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpgzxm3c000p3j6sh0yxygky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/20\/business\/gas-prices-memorial-day-trump-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US gas prices are nearing all-time highs<\/a> as the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 an important passageway for the shipping of oil and other critical goods \u2013 has been effectively choked off for nearly three months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph07epn000r3j6sx0l3djse@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEarlier this year, consumers may have reserved judgment about how long the Iran conflict would last,\u201d Hsu said. \u201cThree months into the conflict, consumers appear to be worried that supply disruptions are unlikely to be resolved quickly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph08fu8000t3j6sfpvagsec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n             Consumers are also concerned that the high oil and gas prices will spread through the economy and make other goods and services even more expensive, she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph0ioqa000v3j6sl76pox8i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To that end, consumers\u2019 year-ahead inflation expectations edged higher to 4.8% from 4.7% in April, and the five-year expected inflation rate jumped to 3.9% from 3.5%. The near- and long-term expectations are back at rates hit during the latter part of last year, when tariffs added to inflationary pressures.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph0nkdm000x3j6sd8zkacyv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the respondents with the biggest increases in long-term inflation expectations were those with political affiliations of independent and Republican, Hsu noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph0qdax000z3j6szaim7too@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor the latter group, long-run inflation expectations are currently more than double their February 2025 reading on a monthly basis,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph0qopc00113j6shdrwg28c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consumers\u2019 expectations about the pace of future price hikes are closely tracked by the Federal Reserve. If people believe that prices will only continue to rise, they might spend more now and demand higher wages, and businesses might raise prices to accommodate higher demand and wages \u2013 thus raising inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph1074c001c3j6szk1twj9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The dour sentiment reading comes at a time when a large swath of data paints a picture of a resilient US economy while the stock market continues to hit new highs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph13l3t001e3j6s8pa3wkdm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not all Americans feel that.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmph0za69001a3j6s3op4tqxt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe American consumer is treading water here, and the income tax refunds must be gone already or the money spent on the higher prices seen everywhere in the economy,\u201d Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FwdBonds, wrote in a statement to investors Friday. \u201cThe stock market record highs are having no effect whatsoever on cheering consumers up which means most Americans have the money locked up in 401K retirement accounts that cannot be drawn on to make life easier now.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Americans just loathe this economy.
