(Supplied&#8221; NSW DCCEEW)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Manning River turtle has been monitored annually in seven rivers over the past four years, including the Barnard, upper Barrington and upper Gloucester rivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Coleman said this year, 26 sites were monitored with 27 Manning River turtles recorded, plus 96 eastern long-neck turtles and 75 Murray River turtles, an introduced species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said a comparison to last year&#8217;s survey data revealed the population had &#8220;remained stable&#8221;, despite an expected flood impact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The manning river turtle is still persisting in most of the sites around the catchment where we&#8217;ve found it before, which is great,&#8221;  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A turtle feeding on bait underwater in a murky river.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f2e843dc452e83deb3e8a460896c0661.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A female Manning River turtle feeding in the Barrington River. (Supplied: NSW DCCEEW)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The surveys have, however, revealed that some turtles have been displaced downstream, away from their more favoured locations near river headwaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Going forward into the next few years, I will be interested to see if those turtles stay there, or they move back to the headwaters,&#8221; Mr Coleman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The population size is quite strong in some areas, and in other areas, it&#8217;s really struggling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So one of the things we want to know in those areas where it&#8217;s struggling is, why is that, what is the key driver \u2026 is it foxes, drought, land use?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Coleman said the Manning River turtle&#8217;s total wild population remained unknown, with researchers hoping to determine an accurate estimate over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>Fish species booming<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Coleman said this year&#8217;s surveys had also revealed some fish species were thriving after the flood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve also seen this boom in freshwater herring and juvenile Australian bass which is really cool,&#8221;  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A canoe tied up in a narrow river system in a rural setting.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/95a8a19994b8fae972306ec56f460270.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Manning River turtle population has remained over time here in the upper Barrington River, and also the Barnard and upper Gloucester rivers.\u00a0 (Supplied: NSW DCCEEW)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re getting big schools of these flashy, silver freshwater herring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The river was flooding and remained high for some time, and that provided opportunity for species to breed and move around.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Manning River is also a unique Australian double delta river system with two permanent entrances to the ocean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s quite a large catchment with some really decent perennial streams and rivers in its headwaters \u2026 I think the fact there are so many different branches of the Manning River itself maybe makes it resilient,&#8221; Mr Coleman said.<\/p>\n<p>Tracking over time<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A small turtle with a yellow stripe along its face and side, in a person's hand.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/30ceb75e10efc7895ad9f08d31cbefa2.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A Manning River turtle that was released back to the wild, after being rescued during bushfires in 2020.
