{"id":603126,"date":"2026-05-25T14:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T14:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/603126\/"},"modified":"2026-05-25T14:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T14:49:08","slug":"james-gray-says-ad-astra-was-taken-away-from-him-by-studio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/603126\/","title":{"rendered":"James Gray Says Ad Astra Was Taken Away From Him by Studio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/james-gray\/\" id=\"auto-tag_james-gray\" data-tag=\"james-gray\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Gray<\/a> has revealed that the released version of his 2019 Brad Pitt-starring \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ad-astra\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ad-astra\" data-tag=\"ad-astra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ad Astra<\/a>\u201d was not his cut \u2014\u00a0and was actually made longer than he wanted by the studio, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/20th-century-fox\/\" id=\"auto-tag_20th-century-fox\" data-tag=\"20th-century-fox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20th Century Fox<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSpeaking in Cannes to Brut to promote his latest film at the festival, \u201cPaper Tiger,\u201d the director didn\u2019t hold back when it came to discussing the sci-fi, which went through extensive reshoots following poor test screenings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI control everything completely on this [\u2018Paper Tiger\u2019] and, actually, I didn\u2019t on \u2018Ad Astra.\u2019 That film was taken away from me. That\u2019s not my cut of the movie,\u201d he said. \u201cYou get into discussions and debates, there\u2019s a studio, then the studio [20th Century Fox] got sold to Disney. You get caught in that stuff. The movie was $80 million, \u2018Paper Tiger\u2019 was $15 million.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe added: \u201cI like to work on that scale because I don\u2019t think it\u2019s productive for people to just change your movie around and you get the blame anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen asked his how his version differed to the studio\u2019s edit of \u201cAd Astra,\u201d he said there were considerable changes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt would have been a very different movie,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cIt would be 12 minutes shorter. I\u2019m the only director who makes a shorter director\u2019s cut. I hope someday I\u2019ll do it. I mean, it\u2019s obviously not up to me, but I would love to do it \u2014 it would be thrilling for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cPaper Tiger,\u201d a 1980s crime drama starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, premiered in competition in Cannes.
