{"id":60326,"date":"2025-08-12T00:00:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T00:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/60326\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T00:00:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T00:00:17","slug":"owen-almighty-nearing-return-later-this-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/60326\/","title":{"rendered":"Owen Almighty Nearing Return Later This Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unraced since the May 3 Kentucky Derby (G1),\u00a0Tampa Bay Derby (G3) winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/thoroughbred\/owen-almighty\/2022?source=BHonline\" title=\"Owen Almighty - Horse Profile - BloodHorse.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Owen Almighty<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"contentIcon-premium\" data-fancybox=\"\" data-type=\"iframe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/horses\/card\/11106510\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> is nearing a return to the starting gate later this month.<\/p>\n<p>The son of Speightstown, who races in the silks of Travis Boersma&#8217;s Flying Dutchmen Breeding and Racing, received some rest and relaxation away from the track immediately following the Kentucky Derby. He returned to the worktab July 13 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/racetracks\/10\/churchill-downs\" title=\"Churchill Downs | BloodHorse.com Track Profile\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Churchill Downs<\/a> for trainer Brian Lynch and\u00a0has worked steadily since, most recently recording five furlongs in :59 3\/5 Aug. 9.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We gave him some time after the Derby; he did really well through that time,&#8221; said Flying Dutchmen&#8217;s president Hunter Rankin on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FFCpPeY3GsI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aug. 11 episode of the BloodHorse Monday podcast<\/a>. &#8220;Some horses go out to the farm, and they really retain their physical. He dropped off a little bit\u2014he let down\u2014so it took a little bit to get his condition back. But I think that time really helped him. He&#8217;s doing great right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The potential targets for Owen Almighty&#8217;s return are the Aug. 22 Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/racetracks\/45\/hollywood-casino-at-charles-town-races\" title=\"Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races | BloodHorse.com Track Profile\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races<\/a>\u00a0and the Aug. 23\u00a0H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/racetracks\/24\/saratoga-race-course\" title=\"Saratoga Race Course | BloodHorse.com Track Profile\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saratoga Race Course<\/a>. Both races are contested over seven furlongs (the Robert Hilton taking place around two turns)\u00a0for a $500,000 purse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Either place\u00a0I know he&#8217;ll give us everything he&#8217;s got. He always does,&#8221; Rankin said. &#8220;We just want to get him started back on the right foot and get him geared up for a fall campaign. I still believe he&#8217;s got the potential to be a very good 4-year-old.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/daily\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sign up for BloodHorse Daily<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Owen Almighty&#8217;s entry in the 1 1\/4-mile\u00a0Kentucky Derby was hotly debated when Flying Dutchmen decided to rejoin\u00a0the field after it was originally reported that he was going to pass and point to a shorter race. To many critics, his pedigree and lackluster sixth-place effort in the 1 1\/8-mile Blue Grass Stakes (G1) suggested distance limitations.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Flying Dutchmen team got the last laugh as Owen Almighty showed up on the biggest stage and gave them a big thrill as he turned for home leading the 19-horse field. The gutsy colt was overpowered at the 3\/16th-pole\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/thoroughbred\/sovereignty\/2022?source=BHonline\" title=\"Sovereignty - Horse Profile - BloodHorse.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sovereignty<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"contentIcon-premium\" data-fancybox=\"\" data-type=\"iframe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/horses\/card\/11153700\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/thoroughbred\/journalism\/2022?source=BHonline\" title=\"Journalism - Horse Profile - BloodHorse.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Journalism<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"contentIcon-premium\" data-fancybox=\"\" data-type=\"iframe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/horses\/card\/11102940\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">, but held on for fifth\u2014the final placing to receive a share of the $3 million purse ($150,000).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He gives you everything he possibly has,&#8221; Rankin said. &#8220;(Jockey) Javier (Castellano) said when he got tired, he just tried harder. It almost makes you emotional to think about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Owen Almighty was the first starter in America&#8217;s most prestigious horse race for Flying Dutchmen.\u00a0The experience left a lasting impression on Rankin, who grew up in Louisville, Ky.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never realized the weight of the race,&#8221; Rankin said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know if you can unless you&#8217;re participating in it. It was such a monumental moment for our team\u2014such a proud moment for our team\u2014to see him try for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Flying Dutchmen team also has another top 3-year-old on their hands in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/thoroughbred\/big-truzz\/2022?source=BHonline\" title=\"Big Truzz - Horse Profile - BloodHorse.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Big Truzz<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"contentIcon-premium\" data-fancybox=\"\" data-type=\"iframe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhorse.com\/horse-racing\/horses\/card\/11141547\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">, who won the Aug. 10 Ellis Park Derby by seven lengths in near track record time.
