{"id":603444,"date":"2026-05-25T19:09:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T19:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/603444\/"},"modified":"2026-05-25T19:09:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T19:09:16","slug":"injured-merseyside-nhs-staff-paid-4-6m-in-damages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/603444\/","title":{"rendered":"Injured Merseyside NHS staff paid \u00a34.6m in damages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The compensation was awarded over the past five years for workplace injuries, assaults, and trauma.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The figures, revealed through Freedom of Information requests to NHS Resolution by Accident Claims Advice, detail claims made under the NHS\u2019s Liability to Third Parties Scheme between 2020\/21 and 2024\/25.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Patrick Mallon, head of workplace accident claims at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accidentclaimsadvice.org.uk\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Accident Claims Advice<\/a>, said: &#8220;Hospitals and healthcare facilities should be environments of safety and healing, but this data shows an alarming reality for the people keeping our health service afloat.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;To see more than 1,000 healthcare workers sue the NHS after being assaulted or falling on the job points to a systemic failure of basic workplace protection.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Diverting more than \u00a3190 million away from patient care to fund injury damages and legal battles is a tragedy for an already cash-strapped service.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Frontline staff have a legal right to a safe environment, and if trusts fail to provide it, workers must continue to use the legal system to protect their health and livelihoods.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>NHS Trusts by total damages paid out (Image: Accident Claims Advice)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust recorded the highest damages figure in the region, paying out \u00a32,268,202 in compensation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This was the fourth highest total of any trust in England.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The trust also reported the second-highest number of claims nationally, with 194 cases logged.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust paid out \u00a31,044,867 after receiving 158 claims.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alder Hey Children\u2019s Hospital paid \u00a3727,574 from 40 claims, while Warrington and Halton Hospitals settled 39 claims for a total of \u00a3246,452.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Other payouts included \u00a3179,779 from the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (seven claims), \u00a3117,628 from Liverpool Women\u2019s Hospital (seven claims), and \u00a339,543 from the Walton Centre (13 claims).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  North West Ambulance Service, which covers a wider area including Merseyside, paid out \u00a31,080,029 from 126 claims.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>NHS Trusts by volume of claims received (Image: Accident Claims Advice)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Across England, the total cost of workplace injury claims reached more than \u00a3190 million during the same period.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Of this, \u00a398.97 million accounted for direct damages, while \u00a386.56 million was spent on legal fees for settled claims where staff won compensation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Fees for successfully defended claims cost \u00a35.26 million for the NHS, with \u00a3144,055 going towards claimants\u2019 legal costs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Slips and trips were the most common cause of injury, leading to 1,763 successful claims and \u00a325.77 million in damages.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  There were 1,021 successful claims related to workplace assaults, costing nearly \u00a318.11 million.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Stress-related claims resulted in \u00a38.84 million in damages.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  University Hospitals Birmingham reported the highest number of claims at 210 and paid out \u00a32.57 million.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The highest total damages payout was recorded by University Hospitals Coventry &amp; Warwickshire, at just over \u00a33 million across 44 claims.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The compensation was awarded over the past five years for workplace injuries, assaults, and trauma.
