Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi<\/a> is collaborating with fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe alumnus Drew Pearce<\/a>, the writer of movies such as Iron Man 3<\/a> and The Fall Guy<\/a>, on a new theatrical reboot<\/a> of 2000 AD’s iconic Judge Dredd<\/a>. According to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, Waititi’s version hopes to launch a Dredd media universe, and the director also plans to take more inspiration from the comics than past adaptations have.<\/p>\n

Dredd has a shaky history of adaptations, so it\u2019s important to make the third time the charm. The key to this reboot’s success will be for Waititi to leave his own personal stamp on the character, and that means utilizing a unique character only he can pull off. Waititi is the only director who can fully realize the incomparable Walter the Wobot for Judge Dredd’s next trip to the silver screen.<\/p>\n

The Next Judge Dredd Movie Needs Walter the Wobot<\/p>\n

Walter the Wobot is a hilarious and loveable character in Judge Dredd lore<\/a>. Once a robo-servant at the Grand Hall of Justice, Walter later becomes the iconic Judge’s personal house robot. Walter routinely acts as comic relief for Dredd comic storylines, usually through his well-meaning personality that becomes a constant nuisance for Dredd. Walter also proved instrumental in helping Dredd win the Robot Wars and beat the rogue robot, Call-Me-Kenneth. Although Dredd initially resents Walter, he eventually looks back fondly upon their time together.<\/p>\n

In other words, Walter has all the perfect makings to be a new sidekick, supporting character, and comedic foil for Dredd in a new live-action movie. The Judge Dredd comics provide great political and social satire, and Walter’s presence would be incredibly timely in light of the public’s current fears regarding generative AI and AI replacement. Not to mention, in such a grim, dark, and bleak post-apocalyptic world as the one in Judge Dredd, Walter will provide some much-needed levity. Although the 2013 Dredd<\/a> starring Karl Urban<\/a> was a major improvement<\/a> over the 1995 live-action version starring Sylvester Stallone<\/a>, it still left a lot to be desired. It was missing that more imaginative comic book style and outrageous satire of the comics, and Walter fits that mold incredibly well.<\/p>\n

Taika Waititi Is the Perfect Director To Pull Off Walter the Wobot<\/p>\n

Waititi, with his styles and sensibilities, might be the only director who could pull off Walter the Wobot on the big screen and make it work, and he’s also the perfect choice to utilize the character. Waititi has found similar success working such characters into the MCU, such as Korg and Miek in Thor: Ragnarok<\/a> and Thor: Love and Thunder<\/a>. Not to mention, a character like Walter perfectly vibes with Waititi’s sense of humor<\/a> and his background in comedies like What We Do in the Shadows<\/a> and Jojo Rabbit<\/a>. Additionally, Waititi brings an odd sort of sweet innocence and na\u00efvet\u00e9 to some of his onscreen characters that gels perfectly for the unusually adorable, well-meaning Walter. Waititi is truly the best and only choice to portray the character onscreen.<\/p>\n

Karl Urban Isn’t Returning for Taika Waititi’s Judge Dredd Reboot<\/p>\n

As fun as it would be to imagine the Karl Urban version of Judge Dredd<\/a> meeting and interacting with a live-action version of Walter the Wobot on the big screen, it will likely never happen. During a recent junket conversation for Mortal Kombat II<\/a>, Urban revealed to Collider’s Aidan Kelley<\/a> that, sadly, he’s not involved with Waititi’s planned reboot of the project, but he’s “super excited” to see what Waititi does with the iconic 2000 AD antihero. Urban informed Collider, “I think that he’s a phenomenal filmmaker, and with modern technology and the world-building that you can do with things like the Volume, I’m super excited to see what he does with it.”<\/p>\n

Although fans have been clamoring for a sequel to Urban’s Dredd for years, as noted in a recent Collider profile of the actor<\/a>, Waititi’s new version of Dredd will likely be a fresh reboot from scratch, and a completely brand-new cinematic take on the character. Walter would also serve as a fun parody of classic depictions of robots from the sci-fi works of Isaac Asimov. Imagine seeing Walter the Wobot act like a cute, harmless, innocent, and cute robot mascot character, like Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, who later, in a big climax, shows up with guns and is blasting bad guys while helping Dredd save Mega-City One? It can easily be visualized with Waititi at the helm.
