He has both the scar tissue and the glowing endorsements to prove as much. But only a few months ago, in February of this year, the 56-year-old needed to devise a brand new rule. Before a first-ever match against his son, Dan, the pair resolved to suspend their regular conversations about work — that is to say, rugby — for a week.

As it turned out, Glasgow Warriors were edged out in Galway despite dazzling moments from Lancaster Jr. Dan set up two Kyle Rowe tries; the first with a pass zipped from right to left, the second by a delicate, left-to-right cross-kick. A last-gasp lineout drive, however, completed a 15-10 comeback victory for Connacht.

This was perhaps the ideal outcome for Nina, Dan’s mum and Stuart’s wife. It also continued a Connacht resurgence comprising eight wins from nine United Rugby Championship (URC) fixtures to reach the quarter-finals. There, thanks in part to another tidy performance from Dan against Ulster to keep Warriors top of the table, they will face Glasgow. And so rugby chats between the Lancaster men have been halted again. Dan’s dog and other family matters have been on the agenda instead.

Lancaster, then Leinster assistant coach, celebrates winning the Champions Cup in 2018 with wife Nina and son DanDavid Rogers/Getty Images

“That’s our way of protecting each other,” explains Stuart. “Dan can look his team-mates in the eye and say we haven’t spoken. You put everything else to one side.”

Friday night at Scotstoun should be compelling. Connacht’s run, aided by the opening of their new three-tier Clan Stand at Dexcom Stadium, has featured a 33-24 defeat of Stormers in Cape Town and other excellent results. Just 12 points were conceded across consecutive bonus-point triumphs over Munster and Edinburgh, epitomising a blend of defensive toughness and attacking intuition.

Lancaster suggests that “pieces of the jigsaw are falling into place” for his team, which is underpinned by a healthy balance. Gnarled figures such as Finlay Bealham and Bundee Aki are supplementing those in their mid-twenties, like Sean Jansen and Cian Prendergast, as fresher faces emerge.

“Once you’ve got that belief it becomes self-fulfilling, really,” Lancaster adds. “The energy gets behind the team and young players keep ripping in. It was just finding the right opportunity at the right time.”

Having left Paris in February 2025, Lancaster interviewed to succeed Joe Schmidt as Wallabies head coach. Rugby Australia plumped for Les Kiss, but Lancaster is relishing the “great energy” in Galway. Rather than commuting from Leeds, as was the case at Leinster while his daughter Sophie and Dan were teenagers, the former England honcho has settled on the Atlantic coast with Nina. Lancaster believes “you have to be all in” and is wholeheartedly committed, tapping into Connacht’s identity as perennial underdogs.

“It’s not a chip on the shoulder, but I think there’s definitely a defiance about the west of Ireland generally,” he explains. “One of the things we talk about is the history of the west of Ireland, how it’s a tough place and we want to make it a tough place to come and win. That put him in the same age-grade cohort as Arthur Clark, Jack van Poortvliet, Raffi Quirke, Fin Smith, Seb Atkinson and Tom Roebuck, all of whom are now capped. Joe Carpenter, the Sale Sharks full back, was a West Park team-mate too, and remains a good friend.

Dan started all five matches of an under-20 grand slam at inside centre, yet bounced between Leicester Tigers, Ealing Trailfinders and Bond University on the Gold Coast of Australia. At Racing, Owen Farrell’s injury issues gave him unexpected opportunities and he ended up playing 21 Top 14 matches, including a 36-31 win over Bordeaux Bègles when his opposite man was Matthieu Jalibert. That game came after his dad’s departure, helping Racing spare themselves from the drop and demonstrating serious mettle.

“I think it was probably harder for him seeing me under pressure than the other way round, but Dan was pretty good at compartmentalising it and playing well,” Stuart says. “Obviously, it would have been tough for him to see me [under pressure] because we were inconsistent. The Top 14 is a different dynamic with relegation and the home and away records of teams.
