Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Taylor Fritz was the highest seed in either singles draw to crash out of the French Open at Roland Garros on the opening two days as the men’s seventh seed went down to a four-set upset to American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy on Sunday to continue his injury-disrupted season.

In the men’s draw, Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to win his first French Open title and to claim the career Grand Slam in the process, continuing a hugely successful season in which he has already made history as only the second man, and the youngest, to win all nine Masters 1000 titles.

The women’s draw meanwhile is full of potential winners, with defending champion Coco Gauff having had a mixed clay-court season thus far but arriving with a point to prove after a tough defeat in the Italian Open final.

The American returns to action alongside Australian Open champion and last year’s runner-up Aryna Sabalenka, four-time Roland-Garros winner Iga Swiatek, and a rejuvenated Elina Svitolina, who recently won her biggest title in eight years on the clay in Rome to put herself among the contenders.

Follow the top players’ progress with our seed tracker here:

Men’s seeds

Jannik Sinner (ITA)Alexander Zverev (GER)Novak Djokovic (SRB)Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN)Ben Shelton (USA)Daniil Medvedev❌ Taylor Fritz (USA) – first round defeat to Nishesh Basavareddy 7-6(5) 7-6(5) 6-7(9) 6-1 Alex de Minaur (AUS)Alexander Bublik (KAZ)Flavio Cobolli (ITA)Andrey Rublev❌ Jiri Lehecka (CZE) – first round defeat to Pablo Carrena Busta 6-3 7-6 (3) 6-3Karen KhachanovLuciano Darderi (ITA)Casper Ruud (NOR)Valentin Vacherot (MON)❌Arthur Fils (FRA) – withdrew with injury Learner Tien (USA)Frances Tiafoe (USA)Cameron Norrie (GBR)Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ESP)Arthur Rinderknech (FRA)❌Tomas Martin Etcheverry (ARG) – first round defeat to Nuno Borges 6-3 6-4 6-2Tommy Paul (USA)Francisco Cerundolo (ARG)Jakub Mensik (CZE)Rafael Jodar (ESP)Joao Fonseca (BRA)Tallon Griekspoor (NED)Corentin Moutet (FRA)Brandon Nakashima (USA) Ugo Humbert (FRA)

Women’s seeds

Aryna Sabalenka Elena Rybakina (KAZ)Iga Swiatek (POL) Coco Gauff (USA) Jessica Pegula (USA) Amanda Anisimova (USA) Elina Svitolina (UKR) Mirra Andreeva Victoria Mboko (CAN) Karolina Muchova (CZE) Belinda Bencic (SUI) Linda Noskova (CZE) Jasmine Paolini (ITA) ❌ Ekaterina Alexandrova – first round defeat to Camila Osorio 6-2 6-4Marta Kostyuk (UKR) Naomi Osaka (JPN) Iva Jovic (USA) Sorana Cîrstea (ROU) Madison Keys (USA) ❌ Liudmila Samsonova – first round defeat to Jil Teichmann 6-4 6-4❌ Clara Tauson (DEN) – first round defeat to Daria Snigur 3-6 7-5 6-2Anna Kalinskaya Elise Mertens (BEL) ❌ Leylah Fernandez (CAN) – first round defeat to Alycia Parks 6-4 6-4Diana Shnaider Hailey Baptiste (USA) Marie Bouzková (CZE) Anastasia Potapova Jelena Ostapenko (LAT) Ann Li (USA) ❌ Cristina Bucsa (ESP) – first round defeat to Susan Bandecchi 6-4 2-6 6-4Wang Xinyu (CHN)

Your support helps us to tell the story From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The…

[38
101,118,56,54,55
post-604463","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-sports","tag-tennis","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
