The extra weight from two children tends to make it faster.

Allowing them on monkey bars when they’re tired

Dropping down from monkey bars, especially very high ones, can also cause injuries. It usually happens when a child is getting tired towards the end of the day, so it’s something to be aware of if a child stretches themselves beyond their skill set.

Buying children e-scooters

More children are being bought e-scooters or hoverboards, which can be risky, especially if they’re adjusted to go above the recommended speed. They have the potential to be much more dangerous than standard children’s scooters because they are heavier and can go faster. Sometimes more than one child goes on them at once, which is even riskier.

If they hit another child, e-scooters can cause lower limb injuries such as fractures to the tibia (the shinbone) due to their weight. I’ve seen many children with injuries caused by e-scooters and hoverboards in hospital and the frequency appears to be increasing, especially those related to e-scooters.

If you’re considering buying one for a child, make sure they’re old enough – they are essentially comparable to a little motorbike, so I don’t think they should be used by children at all. And ensure you follow guidelines about where you can use them.

Letting two children go on a trampoline

While I wouldn’t want to wrap children up in cotton wool, and it’s important to have some degree of risk in life, it’s also common sense to avoid excessive risks. All orthopaedic surgeons fear the trampoline.

Trampolining injuries can be very significant, and children frequently come to the emergency department with limb fractures. All the injuries we see happen when the trampoline hasn’t been used in the correct way. The biggest risk is when two children are on the trampoline at once, which can create a double bounce where one child gets thrown up in the air. You can get a larger child landing on a smaller one, or often the netting around the edge isn’t zipped up and a child flies out of it.

Some fractures caused by trampoline injuries require surgery. I’ve treated so many children who have landed on an outstretched arm, which breaks the arm just above the elbow. They then need an operation to manipulate the elbow into a better position and hold it in place with metal pins.

Not doing the right warm-ups

I’ve seen a surge in patients requiring anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgeries – needed to stabilise the knee – in older children and teenagers, partly because children are training harder in sports including football, netball and rugby. When your body is growing and changing shape and you’re pushing it hard, it can make it very vulnerable to injuries.

A colleague of mine set up the Power Up To Play initiative, which is an evidence-based set of warm-up exercises that experts – including orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists – designed to reduce knee ligament injuries. I’d advise parents to have a look and share it with sports coaches, as these exercises should reduce the number of injuries in future. It’s not just a matter of making sure children warm up before sports, but doing the right set of exercises to have a protective effect.

Forgetting to use door stoppers

Young children can sustain fingernail bed injuries from getting their fingers trapped in the door, often after a sibling slams or closes the door without looking properly. It’s hard to completely prevent these incidents, but where possible, using door hinge stoppers (available from places like Amazon, B&Q, and Screwfix) can help to avoid children getting their fingers stuck in there.

These accidents can mean children need surgery on their fingers. This is most common with a nail plate injury where essentially there is a laceration that goes through where the nail grows from and you need to repair it to prevent a deformity later in life. You can get more severe operations involving a complete or partial amputation of the tip of the finger, which I’ve seen in my previous roles as a senior fellow and registrar (they tend to be operated on by plastic surgeons).

Improper use of bike seats

It’s important to make sure young children on the back seat of their parents’ bike are strapped in correctly. I’ve seen children who got their foot out of the seat and managed to get them stuck in the spokes of the back wheel, which can cause significant injuries. These include fractures of the foot or ankle, or soft tissue injuries of the foot because it’s jammed between the fork and the spokes.

If you’re using a bike seat, make sure you’ve strapped your child in properly so they can’t get their legs out. It is often when the child is getting a bit too old for the seat that they do this.

Using ‘no-back’ booster seats

High-back booster seats are far superior for safety compared with those that just have a base. I recommend parents choose these ones, even for the older child. The high-back seats offer much more protection to the spine and internal organs if the car is involved in an accident. Children can also be at risk of spinal injuries when using car seats with a two-point fixation – which is basically just a belt around the lap – rather than a standard three-point fixation seat belt.

Climbing trees unsupervised

We see a lot of children coming in with broken bones after falling out of trees, especially over the summer. It’s sensible for parents to keep a close eye on young children when they are climbing trees, though there’s also an argument that slightly older children may feel safer if they are watched closely and take greater risks knowing they’re not alone. So, there isn’t necessarily a one-size-fits-all approach – you’ll have to work this one out yourself. Climbing a tree is an important part of childhood, but there will always be a risk of preventable injuries.

While a trip to the playground is a go-to activity for families, around 40,000 children per year in…

[10
26990,7503,242,59,102,2201,56,54,55
post-604954","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-child-health","tag-children","tag-features","tag-gb","tag-health","tag-parenting","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
