\n\tRussell Crowe<\/a>\u2018s autograph etiquette might not be for everyone, but the Gladiator<\/a> star is defending his efficiency.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe New Zealander has been on the receiving end of some social media flak this week after a viral video from TMZ swept X on Monday. It showed Crowe outside of his Paris hotel, addressing some keen fans of the Ridley Scott classic, who stood with merchandise and pens outstretched.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAre you listening?\u201d he begins. \u201cStay where you are. Don\u2019t fucking push in on me, I\u2019ll come to you. Give everybody space. As soon as somebody\u2019s a dick, I\u2019m going. You got me? Clear?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCrowe then starts signing some autographs, and when asked if he can write \u201cMaximus\u201d \u2014\u00a0the name of his Roman general depicted in Gladiator \u2014\u00a0he curtly responds, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFans were split online, with some deeming the actor \u201cquite rude\u201d and \u201cungrateful,\u201d while others replied to the TMZ video: \u201cYou set boundaries for yourself to feel safe and for others as well. You have every right to do just that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe discourse grew so loud that Crowe has now chimed in. On his X account on Tuesday, he accused TMZ of clickbait. \u201cEverybody got their autograph and selfie, the passage to the hotel was kept free for guests, and I still got to the airport on time,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOne man, no security. Handled. What\u2019s your problem?\u201d The response accrued over 50,000 likes by Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

\n\tCrowe\u2019s reputation for no-nonsense has trailed him throughout his Hollywood career. Only last year, at one of Edinburgh Film Festival\u2019s keynote sessions, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald reflected on filming<\/a> 2009 political thriller State of Play, in which Crowe played a\u00a0journalist investigating the suspicious death of the assistant and mistress of a Congressman. \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m saying anything out of turn to say that Russell Crowe is quite a difficult man,\u201d Macdonald laughed, \u201cand he would intimidate the studio to such a degree that they wouldn\u2019t actually want to come to set.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNaturally, reports of Crowe\u2019s temperamental nature have dwindled over the last 10 years. In 2024, he spoke candidly in an interview to GQ<\/a> about those missteps: \u201cI\u2019m in awe of people these days who say, \u2018I have no regrets.\u2019 Really? Not one single thing you ever did. Right? You\u2019re so fucking perfect. I\u2019ve got a shit ton of regrets. An angry word, an overreaction, a missed opportunity for\u00a0friendship\u00a0\u2014 lots of things like that. But all of those things are in perspective, because I\u2019ve done lots of really cool shit too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Academy Award-winning Crowe skyrocketed to fame with roles in L.A. Confidential\u00a0(1997) and\u00a0The Insider\u00a0(1999). He is best known for films such as A Beautiful Mind\u00a0(2001), American Gangster (2007), Les Mis\u00e9rables (2012), and The Nice Guys (2016). He was last seen in James Vanderbilt\u2019s Nuremberg <\/a>(2025), in which Crowe played high-ranking Nazi official Hermann G\u00f6ring.<\/p>\n
