(Image: Paul Gallagher)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The centre provides information and support to people in their cancer experience, whether they are patients, family or friends.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The original cancer care centre which opened in 1997 was created with the help of \u00a3100,000 raised by the &#8216;Cancer Haven Appeal&#8217;, led by The Press &#8211; when it was previously known as the Yorkshire Evening Press.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His Majesty was joined by Clare Smith, chief executive of York Hospital, and Gemma Peters, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, and visited the new centre\u2019s garden, which has been created as a calm environment where visitors can enjoy nature while at the site.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Paul, who is a member of the Camera Club, said his &#8216;little street camera&#8217; lives in my coat so he took &#8216;a few shots&#8217;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"'It got a bit strange' - transplant patient Paul Gallagher\u2019s shock at meeting King at York Hospital.\"\/>&#8216;It got a bit strange&#8217; &#8211; transplant patient Paul Gallagher\u2019s shock at meeting King at York Hospital.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His incredible images captured the King surrounded by a sea of people and smart phones as onlookers took photos of His Majesty as he spoke with hospital staff and patients and shook hands with people as he walked through the hospital.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Recommended reads:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkpress.co.uk\/news\/26139314.king-visits-north-yorkshire-based-conservation-initiative\/?ref=ial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">King visits North Yorkshire-based conservation initiative<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Paul wrote: &#8220;Went to York Hospital this morning for my three week post-transplant check. Bloods, results, the usual. You don\u2019t expect much from these. You turn up, you wait, you hope the numbers are alright and you\u2019re home for lunch.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Then it got a bit strange. More suits about than normal. Staff moving with a bit of purpose. Someone said the King was in the building. I didn\u2019t believe it. Thought it was somebody having a laugh to pass the time.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It was true. (Image: Paul Gallagher)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He added: &#8220;After what he\u2019s been through with his own treatment, that made sense, and it meant something to see him there.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I just happened to be in for my renal check at the same time, so I caught him as he was coming through. He wasn\u2019t rushing it either. Stopped and talked to people. Asked how they were getting on. Seemed genuinely interested rather than just doing the rounds.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I shook his hand. Three weeks out from a transplant, in for a routine check, shaking hands with the King. Still not sure I\u2019ve processed it.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Had my Ricoh in my pocket so I got a few shots. It\u2019s a little street camera, lives in my coat, ideal for something you didn\u2019t see coming. I was also wearing my Meta Ray-Bans, so I\u2019ve got the whole thing on video too. Not had chance to look properly yet. Even if half of them are soft it was worth it.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;So, same time next week, Your Majesty? I\u2019m in fairly often for a while yet.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Not a bad morning, that.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  More than 70 local people with experience of cancer fed into the designs for the newly-redeveloped Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre, from the layout of spaces to the furniture and colour scheme and the services on offer.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His Majesty was due to meet the centre\u2019s designer and speak to patients involved in the process.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He was also invited to view some of the artwork they have selected for display in the finished centre and planted a Macmillan Rose for the Cancer Centre Garden.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  York Hospital, part of the York and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkpress.co.uk\/local-news\/scarborough-news\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Scarborough<\/a> teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation trust, is the base for more than 60 Macmillan professionals, including more than 40 cancer nurse specialists and support officers, to provide support to thousands of people living with cancer in the region each year.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The original cancer care centre has supported tens of thousands of people affected by cancer across Yorkshire since it originally opened in 1997.
