Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water has announced that their ‘boil water’ notice affecting communities across Rhondda has now been “fully lifted”.

It follows an issue at its Maerdy Water Treatment Works on Thursday (21 May) when a burst pipe caused a safety risk with the water quality, meaning nearby customers had to boil their tap water before drinking and cooking.

The company announced three ‘zones’ in its approach to lifting the notice.

All areas affected have now been cleared, with the company confirming that it is safe for households to drink their tap water without the need to boil it first.

The following areas have had the ‘boil water’ ban lifted:

Zone 1 – Penrhys, Maerdy, Blaenllechau, Pontygwaith, Stanleytown, Tylorstown, Ferndale, Wattstown, Ynyshir, Ystrad.

Zone 2 – Trehafod, Llwyncelyn, Graig, Treforest, Pwllgwaun, Hopkinstown, Pontypridd

Zone 3 – Trebanog, Tonyrefail, Penrhiwfer, Cymmer, Williamstown, Porth, Tonypandy, Glynfach.

In an update on their website, Welsh Water Chief Operating Officer, Steve Wilson, said: “We would like to thank all customers for their patience and understanding throughout this incident.

“We recognise the significant inconvenience this has caused, particularly during the recent spell of hot weather, and we are sorry for the disruption experienced by customers and local communities.

“Protecting public health has been our priority at every stage. Before lifting the notice, we carried out extensive water quality sampling, testing and network flushing to ensure supplies consistently met the high standards our customers rightly expect.

“The notice has only been lifted following a series of clear test results confirming the water is safe to use as normal.”
