{"id":607009,"date":"2026-05-27T17:45:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/607009\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T17:45:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:45:11","slug":"uk-and-poland-sign-new-defense-and-migration-pact-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/607009\/","title":{"rendered":"UK and Poland sign new defense and migration pact\u00a0 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Warsaw and London will also work on a new joint action plan on irregular migration that \u201cwill discuss how to boost border security and dismantle organised crime groups,\u201d according to the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, which builds on similar pacts between the two countries signed in 2017 and 2023, is the latest in a long line of bilateral deals as European countries look to reinforce relationships with allies beyond NATO.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 169 multilateral defense deals signed by EU countries, the U.K. and Ukraine since 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.boell.org\/en\/defence-partnerships-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">135 were signed<\/a> after Moscow\u2019s all-out war began in 2022, with 36 signed in 2025 alone. <\/p>\n<p>The continent&#8217;s biggest military powers \u2014 the U.K., France, Italy, Germany and Poland \u2014 are signing deals that bind their defense industries and militaries into a tighter web of cooperation. Poland plans to sign a similar deal with Germany next month.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Arnold, a defense adviser at The D Group consultancy and a former NATO official, said the Northolt agreement is part of a broader effort by Starmer to realign Britain with the EU, and could help signal demand to defense companies for greater production in both countries.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the text, which he argued is \u201cdeliberately \u2026 vague on detail,\u201d has few granular obligations and adds little to previous iterations.
