{"id":60720,"date":"2025-08-12T03:47:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T03:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/60720\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T03:47:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T03:47:15","slug":"lindsay-davenport-says-players-shouldnt-be-pushed-to-do-something-unhealthy-in-support-of-carlos-alcaraz-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/60720\/","title":{"rendered":"Lindsay Davenport says players shouldn\u2019t be pushed to do something \u2018unhealthy\u2019 in support of Carlos Alcaraz decision"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Carlos Alcaraz survived a scare on Sunday evening at the Cincinnati Open.<\/p>\n<p>The French Open champion struggled throughout his second-round contest against Bosnia\u2019s Damir Dzumhur, eventually winning the match 6-1 2-6 6-3.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard has struggled at the <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/cincinnati-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cincinnati Open<\/a> since reaching the final in 2023, losing to Gael Monfils in last year\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alcaraz<\/a>, who is hoping to end the year as world number one, will be aiming to end his year on a high after losing the Wimbledon final to his great rival, <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/jannik-sinner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jannik Sinner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2229434216-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Cincinnati Open 2025 - Day 4\" \/>Photo by Dylan Buell\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay Davenport, another former <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/wimbledon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wimbledon<\/a> champion, has weighed in on a recent decision made by Carlos Alcaraz and his peers after watching Aryna Sabalenka\u2019s opening round victory at the Cincinnati Open.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay Davenport says players shouldn\u2019t be pushed to play an \u2018unhealthy\u2019 amount of tennis<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/lindsay-davenport\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lindsay Davenport<\/a>, the 1999 Wimbledon Ladies Singles champion, was speaking on the Tennis Channel Live Podcast about Aryna Sabalenka\u2019s \u2018clutch\u2019 performance in her opening match at the Cincinnati Open, noting how difficult it is to \u2018buckle down on the big points\u2019 after having a month off.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka, who defeated Marketa Vondrousova 7-5 6-1, had not competed on the WTA Tour since her Wimbledon semi-final loss to <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/amanda-anisimova\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amanda Anisimova<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Davenport\u2019s co-host asked: \u201cWhat does that say [Sabalenka\u2019s performance] about these top players taking a little bit of time off and missing a big event?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davenport replied: \u201cI\u2019m a big proponent of\u2026 if you are at the very top and whether you\u2019re Sinner or Alcaraz or Gauff or Sabalenka, Swiatek, you\u2019re playing to win Grand Slams and you kind of adjust your schedule around that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd sometimes when you go back to back between Roland Garros and Wimbledon, it is exhausting. These developments sparked an ongoing conversation regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/atp-tour-told-their-schedule-doesnt-work-and-must-change-after-carlos-alcaraz-and-novak-djokovic-pull-out-of-toronto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ATP and WTA Tour scheduling<\/a> after the decision to expand the Canadian and Cincinnati tournaments to 15-day events.<\/p>\n<p>What did Carlos Alcaraz say after withdrawing from the Canadian Open?<\/p>\n<p>Carlos Alcaraz, along with Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/jack-draper\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Draper<\/a>, withdrew from the <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/canadian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Open<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n<p>On X [Twitter], Alcaraz explained his decision, saying: \u201cAfter many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year. <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year.
