Some planned procedures have been postponed at Jersey’s<\/a> General Hospital due to a major fault caused by the extremely hot weather.<\/p>\n

Three out of its seven operating theatres have been closed following a mechanical issue, but officials stress that all emergency, urgent and maternity care will carry on as normal.<\/p>\n

Simon West, the Medical Director of Health and Care Jersey, adds that the hospital has cancelled some elective surgeries “as a precaution” and “there is no risk to patient safety”.<\/p>\n

Any affected patients will be contacted directly, while external contractors are being brought in to help with repairs.<\/p>\n

It is unclear how long the issue will last, while Mr West has apologised for the disruption.<\/p>\n

He explains: “Each patient is being clinically reviewed and prioritised, ensuring those with the greatest need continue to receive care as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n

“While there may be a short-term impact on waiting times, rebooking is already underway and every effort is being made to minimise delays.”<\/p>\n

Jersey is currently in a heatwave, recording the hottest May day on record three times in a row<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Health officials have not declared a major incident – unlike neighbouring Guernsey, which announced a critical situation at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital on Tuesday due to high demand for beds unrelated to the current hot weather.<\/a><\/p>\n

However, Mr West does admit that the issues in Jersey can be a symptom of working in an ageing hospital.<\/p>\n

Plans to build the long-awaited new \u00a3710 million facility at Overdale have stalled, with “no guarantee” that a contract will be signed by the Government ahead of June’s election<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Medical Director says: “While this is not a major incident, it does highlight the challenges that can arise in an ageing hospital facility, particularly during periods of unusually warm weather.<\/p>\n

“Additional support measures are in place, including portable air conditioning units … ice pops across services to help staff and patients stay cool and comfortable, alongside access to cold drinks and rest areas.”<\/p>\n

Mr West also praised healthcare staff for their hard work during the heatwave and thanked patients for their understanding.<\/p>\n
