Hayden Panettiere reflected on the emotional toll of relinquishing custody of her daughter<\/a>, Kaya, amid her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The \u201cNashville\u201d alum, 36, admitted she felt \u201cguilt ridden\u201d over being \u201ccompletely incapable\u201d of parenting her now-11-year-old daughter at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe worst thing that somebody said to me is that it was a personal choice that I was making,\u201d Panettiere said during a panel discussion for her new memoir,\u00a0\u201cThis Is Me: A Reckoning,\u201d <\/a>in West Hollywood, Calif., on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The \u201cNashville\u201d alum admitted she felt \u201cguilt ridden\u201d over being \u201ccompletely incapable\u201d of parenting her now-11-year-old daughter at the time. GC Images<\/p>\n

\u201cWho would choose to feel like this? Like, how could you even say that to me? This beautiful child is healthy and everything to celebrate,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd I\u2019m completely incapable of doing it. I felt so guilt ridden that I was incapable of doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panettiere \u2014 who shares Kaya with ex-fianc\u00e9 Wladimir Klitschko \u2014 has previously spoken candidly about battling postpartum depression<\/a> after giving birth in 2014, as well as her struggles with addiction in the years that followed.<\/p>\n

At one point during the panel, the actress recalled being devastated after seeing her face on a magazine cover while walking through an airport years ago.<\/p>\n

She detailed the moment she was walking to her gate when she saw a headline that read, \u201cWhy Hayden Panettiere Gave Up Her Daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might as well have taken a knife and stabbed me in the heart. If anyone knew me, they [would] know that I would do absolutely anything for my daughter,\u201d Panettiere said. \u201cAnd sometimes that means not what you want as a mom or what\u2019s going to make you feel good as a parent, but what\u2019s best for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to be a little careful. I want to make sure I continue to have a beautiful relationship with my daughter,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I\u2019ll just say that sometimes it\u2019s not an option.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panettiere said she was sitting in a restaurant when several witnesses unexpectedly arrived to watch the paperwork signing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was sitting there with these people, gritting my teeth as hard as I can to not start sobbing,\u201d she recalled. \u201cAnd then I just heard them laughing and chuckling, and I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t believe you can watch somebody who\u2019s obviously doing one of the most painful things in the world.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cHeroes\u201d alum said she immediately locked herself in the restaurant bathroom afterward to process \u201cthe reality of the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
