Even though we\u2019d all come from different parts of the U.K., we were all now in London, and so there was great camaraderie.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-d45b2a4c-a592-4ad3-9cc7-3865b6824646-1\">\u201cI think the newspapers really played it up like there were terrible rivalries and we hated each other. It wasn\u2019t true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCartney then shared a story that illustrated the bond between the bands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn and I were down in Charing Cross Road, where our music publisher was, and we were looking enviously into the windows of all the guitar shops,\u201d he said. \u201cAt some point, we heard, \u2018Oi!\u2019 and we looked out in the street. There\u2019s a London taxi going along, and there\u2019s Mick and Keith hanging out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">All the latest guitar news, interviews, lessons, reviews, deals and more, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1a311a7b-65b8-48e5-a7f4-eedb36959297\">The pair \u2014 Mick Jagger and Keith Richards \u2014 invited them into the cab, where the conversation soon turned to the Stones\u2019 need for a new single.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Well, we haven\u2019t got a single,\u2019\u201d McCartney recalled Jagger saying. \u201c\u2018We need a new single.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCartney immediately thought of a song the Beatles had recorded but didn\u2019t plan to release as a standalone single.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe being entrepreneurial or pushy, I said, \u2018Well, we\u2019ve got one that Ringo\u2019s done on the album, and we\u2019re not going to release it as a single,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018You guys would do it great, because it\u2019s Bo Diddley style.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That song was \u201cI Wanna to Be Your Man,\u201d which the Rolling Stones released in November 1963. It became the band\u2019s first U.K. Top 20 hit, reaching number 12.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3f9d50be-eff0-4223-affa-0c49a5aacbe9\">\u201cThat just shows the camaraderie,\u201d McCartney then says. \u201cWe gave them a song instead of jealously guarding it, not wanting them to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Beatles would later release the song on their second album, making it the only song shared across their discographies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-dbb4d7c8-b9d3-4d6c-b8dc-d3406400d477\">The two groups continued to cross paths over the years, including in the studio. Brian Jones sang backing vocals on the Beatles\u2019 \u201cYellow Submarine\u201d and played saxophone on the 1970 B-side \u201cYou Know My Name (Look Up the Number),\u201d while Jagger sang background vocals on their 1967 recording \u201cBaby You\u2019re a Rich Man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lennon and McCartney sang on the Stones\u2019 1967 single \u201cWe Love You,\u201d and Lennon performed with Keith Richards in the group <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/heres-what-happened-when-members-of-the-beatles-the-rolling-stones-the-jimi-hendrix-experience-and-cream-got-on-stage-together\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/heres-what-happened-when-members-of-the-beatles-the-rolling-stones-the-jimi-hendrix-experience-and-cream-got-on-stage-together\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/heres-what-happened-when-members-of-the-beatles-the-rolling-stones-the-jimi-hendrix-experience-and-cream-got-on-stage-together\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Dirty Mac<\/a> for The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus event in December 1968.<\/p>\n<p>Decades later, in 2023, McCartney joined the Rolling Stones on record again when he played <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-bass-guitars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-bass-guitars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-bass-guitars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bass<\/a> on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/player\/keith-richards-interview-2023\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/player\/keith-richards-interview-2023\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/player\/keith-richards-interview-2023\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hackney Diamonds<\/a> track \u201cBite My Head Off\u201d and \u201cCovered in You,\u201d the latter of which is on the group\u2019s new album, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/music\/you-are-robert-smith-from-the-cure-mick-jagger-recalls-the-unexpected-moment-that-led-to-a-rolling-stones-collaboration\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/music\/you-are-robert-smith-from-the-cure-mick-jagger-recalls-the-unexpected-moment-that-led-to-a-rolling-stones-collaboration\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/music\/you-are-robert-smith-from-the-cure-mick-jagger-recalls-the-unexpected-moment-that-led-to-a-rolling-stones-collaboration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foreign Tongues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI showed up as a session player,\u201d McCartney said. \u201cIt was a really good feeling, because I wasn\u2019t a star, I was just the bass player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m standing there playing, and I\u2019m thinking, \u2018I\u2019m playing with the Stones!\u2019 I should be blas\u00e9 and say, \u2018I\u2019ve known them for years,\u2019 but it was special.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou better believe when I got home that evening, I said, \u2018I\u2019ve just played with the Stones.
