Everything we know so far

A Taste For Murder ended its first season with its biggest cliffhanger yet – and viewers are already desperate to know whether ITV’s sun-soaked crime drama with return for another run. The series launched in April 2026 and followed widowed DCI Joe Mottram as he attempted to rebuild his life in Capri alongside his daughter Angelica and his late wife’s family.

But while the Italian setting delivered plenty of postcard-worthy scenery, Joe quickly found himself dragged into a string of dangerous murder investigations alongside local detective Lara Sarrancino.

Over the course of the show, the pair tackled everything from a suspicious death at a murder mystery weekend to crimes linked to wealthy tourists and a former actress. But Thursday’s (28 May) finale raised the stakes dramatically when Joe and Lara came face-to-face with the Camorra, the notorious Mafia organisation whose reach stretched far beyond Capri.

The finale initially appeared to end on a hopeful note. After weeks of uncertainty, Angelica decided to remain in Italy and help run her grandparents’ struggling restaurant rather than return to Britain with Joe.

Joe himself admitted he wasn’t sure he was ready to permanently settle in Capri just yet, although he assured Lara their goodbye wasn’t permanent. But shocking revelations could have upended his plans.

Moments before his departure, Lara finally revealed what she had uncovered while looking deeper into Sofia’s case file. Sofia’s death – previously believed to be a tragic hit-and-run accident – may not have been accidental after all.

Lara discovered that a card left at the original crime scene bore the symbol of the Sacred Heart, which is linked to the Camorra. The same calling card later appeared again after Angelica phoned Joe in panic to reveal her grandparents’ restaurant had been firebombed.

The implication was clear: the Camorra had targeted Sofia before her death, and they were now escalating their threats against the rest of the family. But the biggest mysteries surrounding Sofia’s death have yet to be resolved.

Viewers still don’t know why the Camorra targeted her in the first place or what she may known before she died, presumably killed off. One possible explanation is that Sofia became caught up in that gang’s intimidation campaign against her father Gennaro, who had secretly borrowed money from Camorra boss Rocco Di Biasi while trying to keep his business afloat.

Joe’s personal connection to the case now makes it unlikely he’ll simply walk away. If the show returns, a second season would almost certainly focus on Joe and Lara attempting to dismantle Di Biasi’s operation while uncovering the truth about Sofia’s murder. There’s also the question of whether Joe will ultimately remain in Italy permanently, especially given his growing bond with Lara.

By the end of the finale, the pair had succeeded in damaging the Camorra’s operations, exposing an illegal smuggling scheme. The sting led to multiple arrests, but the biggest threat escaped justice. Rocco Di Biasi himself remained free by allowing his underlings to take the fall for the plan, meaning the danger surrounding Joe and the Da Vinale family is far from over.

At the time of writing, ITV and BritBox have not officially confirmed whether A Taste For Murder will return for a second season. Still, the finale was clearly designed to leave the door open for more episodes. Between Sofia’s unresolved murder, the Camorra’s continued presence and Joe’s uncertain future in Capri, there’s plenty of story left to explore.
