Dereham Rugby Club and Fakenham Rugby Club will enter a combined Level 10 team for the upcoming season.

The team is named Dereham and Fakenham Barbarians, in reference to the invitation-only touring club founded in 1890.

Home fixtures will alternate between the two teams, with their colours and badges combined into a new kit.

Players will train with their parent clubs during the week, before coming together on Saturdays for league matches.

The partnership hopes to bring competitive men’s rugby back to Dereham as well as provide more opportunities and game time for Fakenham players.

A joint statement from the clubs said: “We’re incredibly excited to begin this new chapter together and can’t wait to see players, members and supporters from both clubs get behind the Barbarians this season.

“Here’s to building something special together.”

The team-up is similar to Lowestoft and Yarmouth, who joined forces in 1879 to form one of the oldest rugby clubs in the UK.

The Barbarians, nicknamed the ‘Baa-Baas’, are known for their black and white hooped shirts and have selected players from more than 25 different countries.

Among the alumni of players is Sir Gareth Edwards, who scored what is largely considered to be the greatest try ever scored in rugby in a match against the New Zealand All Blacks on January 27, 1973.

The try involved seven different players and set the tone for the Barbarians to win the match 23 to 11.

The famous club was the brainchild of William Percy Carpmael. Inspired by his personal playing experiences with both Blackheath and Cambridge University, his dream was to spread good fellowship amongst all rugby football players.

The dream became reality in December 1890 at Friary Field, Hartlepool.

Dereham Rugby Club and Fakenham Rugby Club will enter a combined Level 10 team for the upcoming season.…

[22
1397,90,56,54,55
post-609285","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
