A miracle drug dubbed “Viagra for women”<\/a> is set to be launched to “give women their sex life back” after going through menopause. Myregyna inventor Dr Iona Weir said it has been proven in trials to “improve sexual response and sexual function” in women<\/a> over 50.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand-based cell biologist developed the non-hormonal cream <\/a>after going through the menopause herself. And she says women can also use it alongside hormone replacement therapy to support sexual and genital health during and after menopause.<\/p>\n

Iona, 58, said: “It actually boosts natural hydration. Men got Viagra, but women got nothing, right? This is going to be the first non-hormonal treatment that will give you your sex life back.”<\/p>\n

Iona said she had pitched ideas to heads of huge companies, but said of the mostly male bosses: “They\u2019ll ask, \u2018Is that an issue for women?\u2019 Or say, \u2018Oh, we don\u2019t see a market for that.\u2019”<\/p>\n

She blasted the lack of interest in women\u2019s sexual enjoyment “a silent epidemic” and her firm Weir Science expects sales of the plant-based drug to top \u00a37.5billion a year.<\/p>\n

It aims to reverse the effects of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) in millions of post-menopausal women worldwide.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cIt\u2019s such a silent epidemic. They\u2019ve got Viagra, but no one seems to consider that women might have thin, dry vaginas and no longer be as sexually responsive.<\/p>\n

Iona is currently in talks with two global drug firms and is in the process of registering the product with the Food and Drug Administration in the US.<\/p>\n

And she has already been “overwhelmed” by the feedback from women, like actor and ambassador Robyn Malcolm, raving about how life-changing it\u2019s been.<\/p>\n

She told Woman’s Weekly<\/a>: “I have women ringing me up saying they\u2019re excited about jumping on the trampoline or that their husband is so happy. It\u2019s really cool that 35 years of work is actually coming to fruition and making a change. And it\u2019s for women.<\/p>\n

“I looked at the different symptoms women were facing. Some included urinary frequency and weakness, loss of sexual function, drying and tearing of vaginal tissue, and risk of prolapse.”<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cWomen need to understand that it\u2019s not scary. You reach this moment where you don\u2019t care, you don\u2019t feel worried about what people think and you just do what you want. Post-menopause is the last third of your life, but it\u2019s also incredibly liberating.”<\/p>\n
