“This is one of the most extreme cases of dangerous driving we have encountered,” said Detective Sergeant Thomas Johnson.<\/p>\n

It came after a driver and his passenger were handed hefty jail terms for killing a man in a horror smash in Burnage earlier this year. Uways Hussain and Usmon Mahmood filmed themselves inhaling nitrous oxide from balloons while travelling at speeds reaching 139mph.<\/p>\n

Hussain, 20, was driving a VW Golf GTI belonging to friend Mahmood, 23, in the early hours of March 9 this year when they drove through a red light and smashed into Sylvester Abayomi’s Volvo S40.<\/p>\n

Mr Abayomi, 50, was on his way to work when he was hit. He suffered catastrophic chest injuries and sadly died later that morning.<\/p>\n

Also locked up this week was a thief who targeted the elderly whilst pretending to be a tradesman, and a robbery gang who were brought to justice after a run-in in a John Lewis car park.<\/p>\n

Prison terms are handed out to the worst offenders. Manchester Evening News<\/a> reporters are on hand to cover the most serious cases.<\/p>\n

Here is a roundup of the cases before our region’s courts this week:<\/p>\n

Thomas Hallisey<\/p>\n

A \u2018vile\u2019 thief targeted the elderly and vulnerable while pretending to be a genuine tradesman before stealing money from them. Thomas Hallisey, 48, turned up uninvited at homes in Rochdale<\/a> and Littleborough<\/a> before offering to carry out gardening or landscaping services, only to take residents’ cash and never carry out the work.<\/p>\n

When one suspicious victim asked if he was genuine, Hallisey told her: \u201cI love my mum. I wouldn\u2019t like anyone to do it to her. Don\u2019t worry about that, love\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

He has now been locked up following a hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court, where a judge branded him \u2018vile\u2019.<\/p>\n

Anthony Watson, Junior Owen, and James Melia<\/p>\n

A robbery gang who stole an estimated \u00a31m of goods saw their operation brought down after they targeted a woman in a John Lewis car park.<\/p>\n

The trio, who tracked and targeted their victims, had followed the woman for a number of months, including by putting a tracking device on her car before threatening her with a screwdriver, GMP said.<\/p>\n

Junior Owen, 32, Alderue Avenue, Wythenshawe<\/a>, has been jailed for eight years and two months, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and burglary.<\/p>\n

James Melia, 34, of Millom Avenue, Wythenshawe has been jailed for seven years and two months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, possession with intent to supply, and handling stolen goods.<\/p>\n

And Anthony Watson , 39, of Broomwood Road, Timperley, has been jailed for six years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.<\/p>\n

The ‘cash courier’ of a major drugs gang has been locked up after \u00a3100,000 in cash was found in his rucksack when police pulled over a car.<\/p>\n

Pictured sitting in robes, smiling and sipping beers at a spa day, the gang’s members were clearly enjoying the proceeds of their life of crime.<\/p>\n

But the cocaine ring they were running came crashing down around them after Darren Mott, from Irlam in Salford<\/a>, was arrested.<\/p>\n

Mott, 47, is one of 10 men now behind bars for a combined total of more than 52 years after a police investigation into the distribution and supply of the drug in East Lancashire.<\/p>\n

James Black<\/p>\n

A homeless man was rescued from his burning tent after it was torched by a drunk stranger. Gary O’Donnell was left without shelter after arsonist James Black inexplicably struck.<\/p>\n

The 51-year-old was caught on CCTV walking up to Mr O’Donnell’s tent on Corporation Street in Manchester city centre<\/a> just after midnight on November 21 last year.<\/p>\n

He was seen setting it on fire before walking away towards Market Street<\/a>. Manchester Crown Court<\/a> heard he had been drinking heavily as it was the anniversary of his mother’s death.<\/p>\n

People were seen walking past the burning tent, until somebody rushed in to rescue Mr O’Donnell. Police later arrived. Black said he had dropped a joint, but believed it had gone out.<\/p>\n

A judge rubbished those claims, saying it was ‘clearly entirely deliberate’, adding: “Arson in this context is a form of violence.”<\/p>\n

Black, who has 45 convictions for 74 offences on his record, was jailed for two years and 10 months for arson, being reckless as to whether life would be endangered.<\/p>\n

A dangerous driver and his passenger who filmed themselves inhaling nitrous oxide from balloons while travelling at speeds reaching 139mph have been jailed following a horror crash that claimed a man’s life.<\/p>\n

Uways Hussain, 20, was driving a VW Golf GTI belonging to friend Usmon Mahmood, 23, in the early hours of March 9 this year when they drove through a red light and smashed into Sylvester Abayomi’s Volvo S40.<\/p>\n

A court was shown footage of the crash, which happened at the junction of Green End Road and Kingsway in Manchester at 4.30am.<\/p>\n

Mr Abayomi, 50, was on his way to work when he was hit. He suffered catastrophic chest injuries and sadly died later that morning.<\/p>\n

Manchester Crown Court<\/a> was shown video footage taken by both Hussain and Mahmood. They were seen sucking on balloons in the car. They reached speeds of up to 139mph, drove on the wrong side of the road and Hussain filmed himself driving the car with one hand.<\/p>\n

Following the crash, an Apple watch worn by Hussain called 999 automatically after detecting a collision. Unaware of the call, the pair were recorded talking about reporting the car as stolen, arguing about who was going to say they were the driver; and discussing how to remove DNA and ordering an Uber.<\/p>\n

Hussain, 20, of Burnage, was jailed for 11 years and eight months for causing death by dangerous driving; causing death by driving a vehicle whilst uninsured; conspiracy to pervert the course of justice; failing to provide a specimen for analysis and driving without insurance.<\/p>\n

Mahmood, 23, of Levenshulme<\/a>, was jailed for 12 years and nine months for aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving; aiding and abetting causing death by driving a vehicle whilst uninsured and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.<\/p>\n

They were both banned from driving for five years with a extension of eight years.<\/p>\n
