Two people have sadly died and three remain in hospital with serious injuries following a collision on the A1<\/a> in Northumberland<\/a> in the early hours of this morning, police have confirmed. Shortly before 4am today (Saturday), Northumbria Police<\/a> received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1 at the junction for Wandylaw, north of Alnwick.<\/p>\n It was reported that a silver Nissan Juke car was travelling southbound when, for reasons yet to be established by police, it has collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa car travelling in the opposite direction. Emergency services attended the scene where tragically the drivers of both vehicles \u2013 a woman in her 50s from the Juke and a man in his 40s from the Corsa \u2013 were pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n Two passengers in the Juke – a woman in her 20s and a secondary-school aged boy \u2013 along with a female passenger from the Corsa in her 20s, have all been taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries where they remain. The next of kin of the occupants from both vehicles have been informed and they are receiving support from specialist officers.<\/p>\n A section of the A1 in both directions between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge was closed for about ten hours, but the road has since reopened. Now, officers from Northumbria Police\u2019s Roads Policing Unit are appealing for witnesses to come forward.<\/p>\n They are especially keen to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision.<\/p>\n Sergeant Alex Partington, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a devastating incident where two people have tragically lost their lives while three others remain in a serious condition. I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of all affected at this incredibly difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can.”<\/p>\n Sgt Partington added: “Our investigation to establish the exact circumstances leading to this collision is now under way, and we are already conducting a range of enquiries. We are now appealing to any motorists or witnesses who were travelling in the area at this time to come forward.<\/p>\n “We are particularly keen to hear from those who have dashcam footage which may have captured the collision or this section of road in the moments leading to it.
