{"id":613960,"date":"2026-05-31T16:57:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T16:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/613960\/"},"modified":"2026-05-31T16:57:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T16:57:07","slug":"ely-cathedrals-peregrine-chicks-are-weighed-ringed-and-swabbed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/613960\/","title":{"rendered":"Ely Cathedral&#8217;s peregrine chicks are weighed, ringed and swabbed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The birds have each been fitted with two rings that will help conservationists monitor peregrine populations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The trust said young peregrines could be difficult to sex and that DNA records allowed them to build a clearer picture of the birds&#8217; breeding success, movements, survival and family connections over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">During the ringing process, they were able to see the weight of each chick with the male weighing 665g (1lb 7oz) and the two females weighing more than 800g (1lb 12oz) each. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Thompson said: &#8220;We are really lucky. Where they are on the west tower you can see them gliding, swooping and hunting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It&#8217;s fascinating to watch and they are quite vocal as well, peregrines \u2013 even if you haven&#8217;t bothered to look up, it&#8217;s such a distinct sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It attracts lots of people to come and have a look and set their cameras up to try and capture the peregrines.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The birds have each been fitted with two rings that will help conservationists monitor peregrine populations.
