It crowned new champions in various classifications, some more unexpected than others, and yielded some hard-fought, heart-in-mouth stages in the beguiling scenery that the race has become known for.<\/p>\n<p>Ushered in for the first time via a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/a-new-french-star-jonas-vingegaard-shows-his-mettle-and-a-huge-crash-ends-race-for-some-five-things-we-learned-from-the-giro-d-italias-opening-weekend\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/a-new-french-star-jonas-vingegaard-shows-his-mettle-and-a-huge-crash-ends-race-for-some-five-things-we-learned-from-the-giro-d-italias-opening-weekend\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/a-new-french-star-jonas-vingegaard-shows-his-mettle-and-a-huge-crash-ends-race-for-some-five-things-we-learned-from-the-giro-d-italias-opening-weekend\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bulgarian grande partenza<\/a>, the &#8216;firsts&#8217; began straight away, and only continued as the race made its way up the boot of Italy, pinballing from coast to coast before taking riders over the mountains in the north.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c91054ec-b36a-42f3-9f2f-0480995242cf-2\">In Rome, after the dust had settled on the final stage, there was one brand new champion and at least one new star. But that status has, for around two-and-a-half seasons now, come with a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/21-things-you-didnt-know-about-tadej-pogacar\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/21-things-you-didnt-know-about-tadej-pogacar\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/21-things-you-didnt-know-about-tadej-pogacar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tadej-Poga\u010dar<\/a>-shaped caveat: the Slovenian, goes the narrative, is another level up from the diminutive Dane.<\/p>\n<p>With his Giro d&#8217;Italia victory though, not to mention an already-impressive start to 2026, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/visma-lease-a-bike\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/visma-lease-a-bike\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/visma-lease-a-bike\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Visma-Lease a Bike<\/a>&#8216;s Vingegaard is starting to edit that story in his favour. He won the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/who-is-leading-the-2025-vuelta-a-espana\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/who-is-leading-the-2025-vuelta-a-espana\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/who-is-leading-the-2025-vuelta-a-espana\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a last August<\/a>, but the Giro d&#8217;Italia is more prestigious and the win has the added and well publicised bonus of making Vingegaard only the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/from-anquetil-to-froome-here-are-all-the-riders-who-have-won-the-giro-tour-and-vuelta\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/from-anquetil-to-froome-here-are-all-the-riders-who-have-won-the-giro-tour-and-vuelta\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/from-anquetil-to-froome-here-are-all-the-riders-who-have-won-the-giro-tour-and-vuelta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eighth male rider<\/a> to have won all three Grand Tours. Before Poga\u010dar too, who has yet to win the Vuelta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard&#8217;s Italian expedition appeared lukewarm to begin with. The absolute favourite, he began taking solo victories in the mountains as soon as they began, on stage seven to Blockhaus. But he wasn&#8217;t quite as far ahead of his closest rival (Felix Gall of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/decathlon-ag2r-la-mondiale\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/decathlon-ag2r-la-mondiale\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/decathlon-ag2r-la-mondiale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Decathlon<\/a> CMA CGM, who finished second in Rome), as onlookers might have expected.<\/p>\n<p>But Vingegaard&#8217;s condition seemed to hone itself to a sharper edge as the race continued, while his rivals found theirs became blunted or fell away entirely (he was only 13 seconds ahead of Gall at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/jonas-vingegaard-solos-to-giro-d-italia-stage-7-win-on-blockhaus-summit-finish\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/jonas-vingegaard-solos-to-giro-d-italia-stage-7-win-on-blockhaus-summit-finish\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/jonas-vingegaard-solos-to-giro-d-italia-stage-7-win-on-blockhaus-summit-finish\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blockhaus<\/a>, but a full 1:15 ahead on his final summit win on stage 20 to Piancavallo).<\/p>\n<p>At the final count in Rome, the Dane had won five stages (all summit finishes) and the overall by a healthy 5:22.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>Post-stage in the Italian capital Vingegaard said the win had left him &#8220;lost for words&#8221;, so team boss Richard Plugge took up the baton, sending an ominous message to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/tadej-pogacar\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/tadej-pogacar\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/tadej-pogacar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Poga\u010dar<\/a> et al: &#8220;\u2026 Jonas is getting even stronger after this,&#8221; the Dutchman said. &#8220;We planned it so that he\u2019ll be at his peak at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tour de France<\/a>. We are looking forward to that fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4a781e6f-4676-4de4-9f44-0955d75b3c5b\"\/>Paul Magnier (points jersey winner)<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.70%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/uEqt8ThLESqmxXmE3J3aZB.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Magnier wins stage 18 of Giro d'Italia 2026\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/uEqt8ThLESqmxXmE3J3aZB.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/uEqt8ThLESqmxXmE3J3aZB.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)]\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9d64cb45-abbb-4efc-b240-67e704d06f73\">In a race with so few obvious sprinting opportunities, it was perhaps a surprise to find such an intriguing narrative to emerge from the fast-finishing stages.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s Paul Magnier (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/soudal-quick-step\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/soudal-quick-step\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/soudal-quick-step\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soudal Quick-Step<\/a>), still just 22, is hardly an unknown, but he hasn&#8217;t been considered on quite the same level as Grand Tour success stories like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/jasper-philipsen\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/jasper-philipsen\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/jasper-philipsen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jasper Philipsen<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/biniam-represents-everything-we-love-about-cycling-biniam-girmay-joins-nsn-cycling-the-team-formerly-known-as-israel-premier-tech\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/biniam-represents-everything-we-love-about-cycling-biniam-girmay-joins-nsn-cycling-the-team-formerly-known-as-israel-premier-tech\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/biniam-represents-everything-we-love-about-cycling-biniam-girmay-joins-nsn-cycling-the-team-formerly-known-as-israel-premier-tech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Biniam Girmay<\/a> and Jonathan Milan. Until now, that is, because now Magnier has his own Grand Tour success story to tell.<\/p>\n<p>Going into this Giro d&#8217;Italia, all eyes were on home rider Milan (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/lidl-trek\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/lidl-trek\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/lidl-trek\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lidl-Trek<\/a>), a previous winner of the ciclamino points jersey on two previous occasions.<\/p>\n<p>However, he found many of his <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/saunas-endurance-blocks-and-racing-track-how-sprinter-ethan-vernon-trains-every-week\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/saunas-endurance-blocks-and-racing-track-how-sprinter-ethan-vernon-trains-every-week\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/saunas-endurance-blocks-and-racing-track-how-sprinter-ethan-vernon-trains-every-week\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sprinting<\/a> intentions thwarted by the upstart Magnier, who won not only the first stage but also pulled on the first maglia rosa of the race.<\/p>\n<p>He became the sprinting sensation of the race, winning a further two stages and wearing the points jersey nearly every day. Recent editions of the Giro d&#8217;Italia have selected <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/certain-issues-simply-made-my-continuation-at-the-team-untenable-derek-gee-makes-statement-on-israel-premier-tech-contract-situation\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/certain-issues-simply-made-my-continuation-at-the-team-untenable-derek-gee-makes-statement-on-israel-premier-tech-contract-situation\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/certain-issues-simply-made-my-continuation-at-the-team-untenable-derek-gee-makes-statement-on-israel-premier-tech-contract-situation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derek Gee<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/joao-almeida\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/joao-almeida\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/joao-almeida\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jo\u00e3o Almeida<\/a> and Ben Healy \u2013 this year it was the Bahrain Victorious rider Afonso Eul\u00e1lio.<\/p>\n<p>The story was a familiar one: rider finds himself in the race leader&#8217;s jersey; rider thrives in the spotlight and finds abilities he didn&#8217;t realise he had in the struggle to hang on to the jersey, and in doing so wins fans over.<\/p>\n<p>Eul\u00e1lio, 24, might have previously flitted across the consciousness of British fans thanks to his sixth overall at last year&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-of-britain-opening-stage-details-revealed\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-of-britain-opening-stage-details-revealed\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-of-britain-opening-stage-details-revealed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tour of Britain<\/a>. But for most, their first encounter with the Portuguese rider would have been his memorable second place behind Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/igor-arrieta-defies-all-the-odds-to-squeeze-out-a-victory-on-giro-d-italia-stage-5\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/igor-arrieta-defies-all-the-odds-to-squeeze-out-a-victory-on-giro-d-italia-stage-5\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/igor-arrieta-defies-all-the-odds-to-squeeze-out-a-victory-on-giro-d-italia-stage-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stage five in the Giro<\/a> \u2013 a day that was marked by crashes and wrong turns of almost farcical proportions.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/racing\/giro-ditalia\/giro-ditalia-jerseys-pink-purple-blue-and-white-explained-470117\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/racing\/giro-ditalia\/giro-ditalia-jerseys-pink-purple-blue-and-white-explained-470117\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/racing\/giro-ditalia\/giro-ditalia-jerseys-pink-purple-blue-and-white-explained-470117\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">maglia rosa<\/a> was the consolation prize, but one that few expected him to wear beyond the Blockhaus stage two days later.<\/p>\n<p>However, Eul\u00e1lio held on to it that day. And the next, and the next. In fact, he ultimately grimaced and ground his way through a further eight stages resplendent in pink. But once Vingegaard had inevitably lifted it from his shoulders, there was no dramatic capitulation. The young Italian hotshot was ready, his Red Bell-Bora-hansgrohe team said at the time, to challenge for the podium at the Giro d&#8217;Italia.<\/p>\n<p>However, it became clear early on that Pellizzari was no longer on sparkling form. What was happening, we wondered. Were his Alpine exertions exactly a toll? The answer, it transpired, was that he&#8217;d been struck by a bug \u2013 one ended up plaguing him for much of the race.<\/p>\n<p>He slipped slowly out of GC contention and finished, ultimately, in 21st place. His participation was hardly a wasted one though \u2013 as well as gaining great experience in what it is like to keep fighting when the cause is lost, he turned in some valuable <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/gravel\/are-gravel-domestiques-coming\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/gravel\/are-gravel-domestiques-coming\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/gravel\/are-gravel-domestiques-coming\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">domestique<\/a> duty in the final mountain days.<\/p>\n<p>All the same, speaking afterwards, he said he was glad the &#8220;ordeal&#8221; was over. &#8220;I don\u2019t want to keep a single memory of this Giro.
