Credit: Gov.uk<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">WhatsApp messages between Mandelson and now Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden reveal heavy criticism of the <a class=\"qNUzV q7LZa\" data-testid=\"next-link-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/topic\/keir-starmer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prime minister&#8217;s<\/a> leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Mandelson told McFadden that the PM &#8220;is not leading from the front&#8221; and goes on to say that he believes things in Number 10 are &#8220;not good&#8221; and after a visit to Number 10 himself, Mandelson claims it &#8220;is beleaguered and bereft&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Mandelson and Pat McFadden worked together under Tony Blair&#8217;s government. Credit: PA<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Talking of unrest within the party, McFadden says Labour MPs are always asking &#8220;who can we tax in order to pay benefits to others&#8221; while also branding the welfare reforms as &#8220;very bad&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">In response, Kemi Badenoch has branded Labour as &#8220;the party for Benefits Street&#8221; and claims that the government will tax the country &#8220;into poverty&#8221; to cover the welfare bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">The files show hundreds of messages between the pair, with Mandelson heavily critcising the PM, claiming he lacks &#8220;verve&#8221; and &#8220;panache&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">After Labour&#8217;s close defeat at the <a class=\"qNUzV q7LZa\" data-testid=\"next-link-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/granada\/2025-05-02\/reform-uk-beats-labour-by-six-votes-to-take-runcorn-and-helsby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Runcorn by-election<\/a>, Lord Mandelson goes on to urge McFadden to break the &#8220;mould&#8221; and says that the government should behave in a more &#8220;Trumpian risk taking and dare devil way&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>One of the hundreds of WhatsApp messages between Lord Peter Mandelson and Pat McFadden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">The vetting process surround Mandelson&#8217;s appointment have also been a focus of these documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">A Foreign Office official told the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) that Mandelson &#8220;is yet to receive his DV clearance&#8221;, but due to the timeframe of his appointment and his role as a Privy Counsellor, seniors gave Mandelson access to more classified material. Direct to your inbox every Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Speaking in the Commons on Monday, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, Darren Jones, said the files are &#8220;one of the largest government publications ever laid before this House&#8221; and that the disclosure process has cost the Cabinet Office more than \u00a31 million.Jones defended the process and said the documents were redacted because they could impact national security. He said the remaining documents would be published &#8220;when the police are content for us to do so&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Key findings in the newly released files <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Mandelson said the government would \u201cnever regret\u201d appointing him as ambassador to the US in a written note to David Lammy<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">He \u201cdeclined to comply\u201d with a request to hand over his WhatsApp messages and other information on his personal phone to the government <\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">In an email, he said former transport secretary Louise Haigh\u2019s exit from government was \u201charsh\u201d after she quit over a fraud offence<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">A Foreign Office Official said that Mandelson was given access to classified information before receiving full clearance<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden shared criticisms of Starmer with Mandelson<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Concerns previously raised about Mandelson&#8217;s security clearance being rushed through are reinforced in these files.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">MPs will be allowed to debate the release of files on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">In February, MPs voted to demand ministers publish a range of documents relating to the appointment, using an archaic parliamentary process called a &#8220;humble address&#8221; following the launch of a police investigation into Lord Mandelson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">The first batch of files was released in March and included due diligence and advice provided to the prime minister, warning him of the &#8220;reputational risks&#8221; of appointing Mandelson to the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Mandelson was sacked in September 2025 following further revelations about his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, for which he had previously apologised, claiming he did not witness wrongdoing in his interactions with Epstein and &#8220;deeply regrets&#8221; continuing his relationship for so long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Since then, he has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office but denies all allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Downing Street indicated the release of documents was everything it planned to publish on Lord Mandelson, apart from files held back at the request of Scotland Yard to avoid jeopardising its investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">From Westminster to Washington DC &#8211; our political experts are across all the latest key talking points.
