You never know quite what you\u2019re going to get with a Minions movie. Sometimes it\u2019s a classic Gru-and-family adventure, as in the Despicable Me<\/a> films. Sometimes it\u2019s a \u201870s B-movie depicting the rise of Gru, as in Minions: The Rise Of Gru<\/a>. Or in the original Minions spin-off, it was a jaunt through history as the little guys worked to find their ultimate overlord. Now, prepare for something completely different: Minions & Monsters isn\u2019t just a new Minions movie; it\u2019s a Minions monster movie, specifically about the Minions trying to make a monster movie in 1920s Hollywood. Think Babylon<\/a>, meets James Whale’s Frankenstein<\/a>, with Minions.<\/p>\n

Having the nonsense-babbling creatures front and centre \u2013 while pairing them with other supernatural creatures \u2013 means that Minions & Monsters will feature an entire 15-minute section spoken only in \u2018Minionese\u2019, the quasi-language voiced by creator Pierre Coffin \u2013 who also directs here, for the first time since 2017\u2019s Despicable Me 3<\/a>. It helps that the Minions have always been indebted to early cinema. \u201cAll the Minions stuff is heavily inspired by silent-movie stars,\u201d Coffin tells Empire. \u201cThere\u2019s this magic element to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Placing them in the early days of Hollywood \u2013 and alongside other fantastic beasts \u2013 should result in the kind of anarchy that the Minions have always embodied. \u201cI want to hope that the reason why the Minions are successful is that in this era of highly political correctness, they\u2019re on the edge of being insolent,\u201d Coffin explains. In a way, the Minions unite us all. \u201cThe whole point of it is that you don\u2019t understand them when they speak \u2014 but you understand them nonetheless,\u201d he says.
