\n The civil lawsuit builds on the first ever criminal investigation<\/a> into OpenAI which Uthmeier launched in April, over whether the company \u201cbears criminal responsibility\u201d for a mass shooting at Florida State University last year.\n <\/p>\n \n The accused shooter in that case had extensive conversations with ChatGPT in the leadup to the shooting, including on specifics about mass shootings at the university and advice on how to use the weapons, Florida authorities allege.\n <\/p>\n \n OpenAI said at the time that the shooting \u201cwas a tragedy, but ChatGPT is not responsible for this terrible crime.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cIn this case, ChatGPT provided factual responses to questions with information that could be found broadly across public sources on the internet, and it did not encourage or promote illegal or harmful activity,\u201d an OpenAI spokesperson said in April.\n <\/p>\n \n Uthmeier said he expects other states to join his effort.\n <\/p>\n \n Several states have taken action against other AI companies.
